Camargue

Parc naturel de Camargue, Provence, France

The Basics

Most visitors choose to explore the Camargue on a day trip from towns like Aix-en-Provence or Avignon, or on a shore excursion from the Mediterranean port of Marseille. A Camargue tour typically takes in regional highlights such as the Camargue capital of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, the medieval port town of Aigues Mortes, the seaside resort of Le Grau-du-Roi, and the Provencal village of Arles, known for its connections with Van Gogh. The UNESCO-designated biosphere reserve is a popular destination for outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, and horseback riding, and visitors can also enjoy a cruise along the Petit Rhône river, a canoeing excursion around the marshes, or an off-road jeep tour along the coast.

Camargue 4x4 Safari 2 hours Saintes Maries de la Mer
Paul the guide was very knowledgable about the Camargue and the bird and animal life. He was very open and friendly and ensured we saw flamingos in their natural environment. He also protects the area as he stopped to clear plastic and rubbish from the salt marshes and canals.

4x4 Camargue Safari 4h - Departure from Arles
The guide did a nice job personally translating for me since I was in the car with the French speaking group. I learned lots about the landscape and animals in the area, and would recommend this to anyone interested to exploring outside the city.

4x4 Camargue Safari 4h - Departure from Arles
We really love the trip! There is no way you can enjoy Camargue without a car. And sitting in a car with a open roof is really cool! We saw a lot of wild animals, including the flamingo! The guide is very experienced and well prepared. There is even a binocular and a bird guide book in the car, which is really enjoyable. The stop at the sea side town is very enjoyable as well - just feel it is too short!

Our tour guide Gordanna was what made this tour memorable. The sites were breathtaking. The flamingos and the horses were amazing. Seeing the Mediterranean Sea was so beautiful and the food out of this world.

a unique experience in wild and authentic Camargue, a 4x4 safari
This entire tour was given only in French. Since my own French is quite rusty, I didn't understand all that the tour guide/owner was saying. However, I really enjoyed this as he brought us to many private areas otherwise unaccessible to tourists. The tour went through bogs and narrow tracks, along dikes, etc. that really required the use of the 4WD vehicle. We drove by many vineyards, saw many Camargue horses and bulls up close, and got out of the Land Rover to see salt marshes first hand. The tour ended with a side trip to see the flamingoes. Lots of flamingoes! The guide gave us lots of opportunities to take photos as well. Highly recommended!

4x4 Camargue Safari 4h - Departure from Arles
Sightings of Camargue horses, bulls and flamingos were great, but even better was our guide Isobel’s sharing of local knowledge and history of this amazing place. We were lucky to have a sunny day.

4x4 Camargue Safari 4h - Departure from Arles
Isabelle was a terrific guide; she knew her material and those back roads, and could show us the "good stuff". Her beautifully-accented Engish worked well in our mixed group of English-speakers (US, Australia, and UK). I really enjoyed it. Was disappointed when my Alpilles tour was cancelled (twice) but I managed an alternative day trip on my own, using public bus line.

How to Get There

The Camargue is located along France’s Mediterranean coast between Montpellier and Marseille. Public transport to the Camargue is limited, and most visitors opt to explore the region either by private vehicle or as part of a guided tour. It’s about a one-hour drive from Avignon to Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, and the closest international airport is in Nîmes.

When to Get There

The most popular time to visit the Camargue is between March and October, the season of the jeu taurin (non-violent bullfighting), when many area villages host traditional festivals and races. During peak summer season (July and August), temperatures can reach over 86°F (30°C) and mosquitoes can be a pain, so plan outdoor activities for the early morning or late afternoon, when it’s cooler.

Wildlife Watching in the Camargue

In addition to the famous white horses and black bulls, the Camargue is home to some of France’s most diverse bird life, with more than 400 different species. At Pont de Gau Ornithological Park, a top destination for bird watching, you might also spot egrets, ibises, kingfishers, goldcrests, and birds of prey, as well as ducks, swans, and some of the region’s 10,000-plus flamingos.
