The Basics

There are several options for exploring the grand basilica. See it as part of a Paris city tour or on a walking tour of the atmospheric Montmartre neighborhood. You can also book a guided tour of the lavish interiors to see highlights such as the apse mosaic, the grand organ, and the crypt. Visitors can also climb the 234-step spiral staircase to the top of the dome for panoramic views of the entire city, including the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame Cathedral.

Guided Tour of Sacré-Coeur and Montmartre
We were a little late and our tour guide graciously waited for us before starting a very interesting tour of the church and area of Montmartre. My teen-age granddaughter said this was one of her favorite tours of the entire trip.

Montmartre and Sacre Coeur Walking Tour in Paris
It would be helpful for the tour to explain the rigor associated with the tour. There were folks on the tour who were unable to handle the steep hills and walks. Otherwise, tour guide was fantastic, knowledgeable, and great all around.

Paris: Montmartre and Sacre Coeur Private Tour for Kids and Families
Having a guide to visit a neighborhood makes such a huge difference. Our guide, Agathe, was thoughtful, engaging, and full of interesting stories. We gained so much more insight than we would have ambling around on our own. Unfortunately, the day we went was so crowded that we ran out of time to go inside Sacre Couer which was disappointing. But we loved our tour, nonetheless.

Montmartre and Sacre Coeur Walking Tour in Paris
We've visited Montmarte on our own in previous years but joining the walking tour under "Kit" was an eye opener! Kit is very knowledgeable regarding all the famous artists and writers that lived in Montmarte. He will will walk you past the previous haunts of Picasso, Van Gough, Renoir, J.D. Salinger, Gertrude Stein and others. His stories bring the past to life. Kit is also an artist so his perspective is one of appreciation of this historic neighborhood and its living past! Thanks, Kit!

When to Get There

The basilica is open daily all year round, but it can get crowded in peak season, so opt for an early morning visit to avoid the crowds. For budding photographers wanting to capture the views, the most flattering light happens just before sunset, although note that it can be busy at this time.

A Walking Tour of Montmartre

The Basilique du Sacré-Coeur is one of the most memorable sights of Montmartre, but the bohemian ‘village’ has plenty of other attractions. A walking tour means you can explore like a local, stopping by famous landmarks such as the Moulin Rouge and the Artists’ Square; follow in the footsteps of artists like van Gogh, Monet, and Picasso; and explore the many shops, galleries, restaurants, and cafés.
