The Basics

Castel Sant’Angelo is located just outside the walls of Vatican City, and many visitors combine a walking tour of St. Peter’s Basilica with a museum visit and a stroll across the picturesque Ponte Sant’Angelo bridge into central Rome. There can be a wait to enter if you don’t book skip-the-line museum tickets in advance, especially during summer. Castel Sant'Angelo and the Colosseum are two of Rome's most stunning sights to visit after sunset, so consider a Rome night tour to see both the castle and amphitheater beautifully illuminated.

The tour guide was very accommodating and friendly to everyone. She was very informative and kept the tour interesting with her knowledge and humour. The tour itself is very good the inside and outside of the castel is very beautiful and the views of Rome from the roof are amazing.

We truly enjoyed our visit to Castle San Angelo. Our guide, Alec, did a fabulous job explaining the history and bring that history to life.

Skip-the-lines Castel Sant'Angelo and Pope Paul III Apartments Tour
Our tour guide was awesome. He is funny and has great storytelling ability, full of details, definitely, he was the best tour guide we had on our trip.

Thoroughly enjoyable way to spend an hour

Great excursion, lots of history and wonderful vantage points, the breeze was a welcome respite from the blazing sunshine too. The only reason we didn’t give 5 stars was because we didn’t receive the audio headsets as advertised (might have been our fault as the entrance was confusing).

Guide communicated information with exactness yet not too much detail...unless you asked. Perfect delivery and timing from one stop to another. On time.

Castel Sant'Angelo Pantheon & Piazza Navona Tour for Kids and Families in Rome
Francesco made this a great experience for the whole family. He gave us a bunch of great information but did so in a way that was engaging for the whole family. We had three tours during the week with three different guides. All the guides were good, but Francesco was our favorite.

Viator is a disappointment. Never again.

Castel Sant’Angelo Ticket Entrance Skip-the-Line
Unfortunately, buying through Viator was a mistake. The communication was inconsistent and over priced. It was not explained that the tickets needed to be picked up at a third party location or that the What's App was required for communication. Then a last minute email came in that the tickets could be downloaded but they wouldn't download. We lost a lot of our limited time. Ultimately, the staff at the Caster office approved us to go in with their own tickets, which happen to be less expensive. I will never use Viator again.

Castel Sant'Angelo visit in April 2022

Castel Sant'Angelo reserved entrance ticket
My husband and I enjoyed the audio guide. We checked in with a representative outside Castel Sant' Angelo who was patient and helped us download the audio to our cell phones. We spent about two hours in the castle and marveled at awesome views of Rome from the castle's rooftop. My only suggestion is the rooms mentioned in the audio were numbered but was difficult to correlate because the actual castle rooms were not numbered. We missed a few room but still covered about 90% of the areas that visitors were allowed to see. A great tour overall. Highly recommend

  • The large terrace, where Puccini's heroine jumped to her death in his opera Tosca, has spectacular views over the Eternal City.

  • Kids enjoy the large collection of historic weapons and armor displayed in the museum.

  • The sumptuous Pope Paul III Papal Apartments are decorated with perfectly preserved Renaissance frescoes, a highlight for art aficionados.

  • There is an elevator to the fifth floor, but most of the museum is not accessible to wheelchairs.
