The Basics

A Vatican Museums ticket includes access to the Sistine Chapel, and as part of the Vatican Museums, the chapel cannot be visited on its own and can only be entered through the museum complex. Because the Sistine Chapel attracts millions of visitors each year, those who don’t reserve skip-the-line access in advance will find long lines upon arrival. Many travelers find that the complex frescoes are best appreciated with the assistance of an official tour guide, so booking a group tour, an expert guide for a private tour, or even a self-guided audio tour is recommended.

Breakfast at the Vatican
The breakfast was amazing although the folks serving us were very unfriendly and nothing was explained when we went in the establishment. It was still worth it tho, the amount of food and beverage more than made up for not knowing what was happening. At first we were only given 20 min to go in, be seated and eat, but it turned into 30 min so that was enough time. We really enjoyed the personalized tour

Early Access Vatican Museums Semi-Private Tour with Sistine Chapel & St. Peter’s
Your guide was knowledgeable but sometimes couldn’t hear everything due to loss of signal. Tour was easy to book. Was upset as paid to see st Peters Basilica but was told we couldn’t due to Covid restrictions but didn’t get a refund

It was great but far too busy and each corridor was packed. No real covid spacing. The sistine Chapel was overloaded.

Rome Vatican, Sistine Chapel and St Peter's Basilica Early Morning Express Tour
Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and was able to get us access to St. Peter’s which had previously been difficult with COVID and the Easter holiday. This saved us a lot of time.

Skip-the-Line: Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel Guided Small-Group Tour
I took the Italian tour with Alberto. Because of COVID restrictions, we couldn't always spend lots of time in each room of the museums, but it was a good tour all the same.

Wonders of Vatican: Museums, Sistine Chapel and St Peter's Basilica Guided Tour
We enjoyed our tour with Viator. The tour guide was very informative. I did feel we were rushed & would have liked more time . The guided tour of the Basilica was not included due to covid restrictions 😩 but our guide kindly escorted us there.

Skip-the-Line: Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel Guided Small-Group Tour
The guide Giuseppe was very friendly. The tour was fairly interesting although there are only so many paintings that you want to see so it became a bit repetitive for me. By the time we got to the Sistine Chapel it was nothing special. There was a lot of people visiting, very busy but well managed. Apparently the crowds were small compared to pre Covid times.

Fast- track- entry ticket to the Vatican Museums & the Sistine Chapel
We took a taxi to the meeting point. It was very easy to find. We were walked to the museum and given our tickets, at which point we were on our own- which we prefer. This location had many guided tours as well, should you want to book that.

Early Access Vatican Museums Semi-Private Tour with Sistine Chapel & St. Peter’s
Great Tour! Amil was superb! Finding our tour group was smooth. The areas we explored on the tour were interesting and purposefully curated. The best part of the tour though was our guide, Amil. She was funny, insightful, and captivating.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Seeing Michelangelo's frescoes can be unforgettable even for kids if seen as part of a small-group or kid-friendly Sistine Chapel and Vatican tour.

  • Because the chapel is a Catholic church, appropriate attire and decorum are required. Wear clothing that covers your shoulders and knees and to keep your voice low.

  • Though photography (without flash) is permitted in the Vatican Museums, no photography is allowed in the Sistine Chapel.

When to Get There

The Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel are famously crowded, especially during the middle of the day. To skip the line and savor the chapel frescoes in relative peace, reserve an exclusive first-entry or early-access tour in the morning or a night tour after the general public has left. The chapel is often quieter on Wednesday mornings, when the papal address attracts most visitors to St. Peter’s Square instead of the museums.

Sistine Chapel Highlights

It’s easy to be overwhelmed by the majesty of Michelangelo’s sumptuous ceiling frescoes, which cover 5,000 square feet (460 square meters) and depict more than 300 figures illustrating the “Creation of the Earth,” the “Creation of Humankind,” and the “State of Humanity.” Take a few moments to focus on and appreciate the iconic scene of the “Creation of Adam” in the ceiling’s central section, one of the most famous and replicated religious paintings of all time.
