Amsterdam Canal Ring (Grachtengordel)

Amsterdam Canal Ring (Grachtengordel)

Amsterdam

The Basics

The district’s major canals are the Singel, Herengracht, Keizersgracht, and Prinsengracht. From east to west, the major radial canals are the Brouwersgracht, Leidsegracht, and Reguliersgracht. The Canal Ring can be navigated on foot, by bike, and, of course, boat. A canal cruise is an excellent introduction to the UNESCO-listed canals, as glass-topped boats provide the best views of the city’s main sights. Options include hop-on hop-off boat tours and themed canal cruises that serve food and wine.

Wonderful way to see Amsterdam
This is a wonderful way to experience Amsterdam. A small group boat with shade, quiet electric engines, open bar and food, and a knowledgeable driver who provided some interesting facts about the city and the sights. Was wonderful to see the city from the water and well worth doing.

This canal cruise was perfect!! Our guide Klaas was fantastic, both humorous and knowledgeable. Each couple received a personal platter with cheese, meat, crackers, fruit and cookies. The beverage selection was excellent, something for everyone, and there was plenty to have as much as you would like. The scenery was gorgeous, and the ride was very relaxing and more enjoyable than our walking tour. We found it to be one of the best ways to see Amsterdam.

We had a wonderful experience! Hans, our captain, was knowledgable and very nice. Snacks and drinks on-board were very good. Even though it was raining, the boat was covered and we were nice and dry. We got a great view of the canal sights. We would highly recommend.

Fun Introduction To Amsterdam

The Ultimate Amsterdam Canal Cruise - 2hr - Small Group with Drinks & Snacks
We had just arrived in Amsterdam and thought the canal cruise would be the way to start our trip--and it was! Our guide, Mischa ("Mouse") was excellent. He was personable, funny and full of information. We were traveling with another couple and they totally agreed that the cruise was a great introduction to Amsterdam. Mischa's enthusiasm and levity was contagious and everyone on the boat had a great time. The free-flowing wine, beer and munchies also added to the good time!

Amsterdam Canal Cruise - 60 minutes - pickup at Anne Frank
Great tour! Skipper Martin brought us to extra places because we were the last tour. He really went above and beyond considering I’m sure he does many of these tours. Very fun and lively! Super informative about the history and culture of Amsterdam and the canals.

The canal cruise was an amazing way to see Amsterdam! The atmosphere was so fun and the captain shared great stories that helped explain the history of the city. The operator offered to adjust our departure time to ensure that we would have a covered boat, which was very much appreciated when rain rolled through. Highly recommend!!

The captain, Tom, was a wonderful guide. His pleasant and knowledgeable manner were only eclipsed by the beauty of his boat and the lovely charcuterie platter, flowers, wine, etc. This cruise was our favorite experience in Amsterdam. Thank you Tom!

How to Get There

The Canal Ring is located right in the center of Amsterdam, and is easy to reach on foot from most major destinations in the Dutch capital. Amsterdam's winding, cobblestoned city center can easily throw off your sense of direction, and the canals will always orient you back in the proper direction.

When to Get There

Because it’s part of the Dutch capital city’s landscape, as well as a mode of transportation and commerce, the Canal Ring is always open. The best times of year to enjoy a canal cruise are during the fine-weather summer months, and in the Christmas and New Year holiday season, when you can take an evening cruise during the Festival of Lights.

The History of Amsterdam's Canals

Built in the 17th century, the canals of Amsterdam were developed in the pursuit of growing the city beyond its bounds. Now, they're as quintessentially Dutch as Edam and tulips and have been UNESCO-recognized since 1999. Enjoy the canals at their festive best during the annual King's Day celebrations, when floats take to the water with performers and revelers.
