The Basics

There are many ways to explore the Brisbane River, from zipping along the riverfront on a bike or Segway tour or strolling through nearby neighborhoods to soaring overhead in a helicopter. You can set sail on a dinner cruise, or combine a sightseeing cruise with a visit to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. Active travelers can do some kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding, enjoy unbeatable views on a Story Bridge climb, and enjoy the Brisbane Riverwalk.

A wonderful experience.
We had perfect weather for our cruise upriver. What an amazing feeling to be able to hold a beautiful koala and purchase a photo for an everlasting memory. The free flight raptor show was spectacular with magnificent birds zooming over the top of our heads.

Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary Admission with Brisbane River Cruise
We did the River/Lone Pine tour which is a must. The staff on the boat are amazing and the commentary is hilarious.. The park itself is well done and clean, would highly recommend paying the $25 to hold the koala but they do offer a photo op for free which we did both😃 Such an awesome day

Spin around Brisbane on a dime

Brisbane Segway Sightseeing Tour
Kevin and Sebastian were wonderful hosts and very patient with us when we were late for our scheduled tour and cheerfully booked us for the later, longer tour which was well worthwhile. Sebastian made learning how to ride a Segway really easy. It’s a combination of a bike, scooter, ice skating and horse riding. Those Segways turn on a dime and you never have to dismount when you come to a stop. The tour route takes in most of the attractions of Southbank but also crosses the river through the gardens. Our group wanted to go fast but my friend and I liked to take in the sights on the way. Sensational an stopped regularly to check we were all doing okay. I recommend the Segway tour for people of all ages. The youngsters loved it but it’s a good and relatively inexpensive way for older people to get around this part of Brisbane.

A must for all who visit Brisbane

Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary Admission with Brisbane River Cruise
The boat trip was very comfortable. All the way up the Brisbane river the guide provided us with comments on what we could see on both banks, its history and fun facts. After we arrived, we had plenty of time to explore the Koala Sanctuary. But let the name of this national park not confuse you, because you will find other animals native to Australia as well. I particularly enjoyed kangaroos who live there in the free and you can pet them, feed them and watch them be in their natural habitat.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • A Brisbane River cruise is a great way for first-time visitors to see the city’s sights and get their bearings.

  • It can get chilly along the river at night, so bring warm clothing if traveling on an open-air boat; sunscreen is a must for daytime cruisers.

  • Most boat cruises are wheelchair accessible, but it’s best to check in advance.

How to Get There

Wherever you are in the city, you’re rarely more than a 15-minute walk from the riverfront. The easiest (and cheapest) way to navigate the Brisbane River is using the CityCat ferries, which stop at 24 different ferry terminals through the city. Bikeways and walkways wind along the river’s banks in most places, and there are five pedestrian bridges to help you make your way between the north and south banks.

When to Get There

Brisbane River cruises and CityCat ferries run regularly all year round, but for the most atmospheric views, opt for a sunset sightseeing cruise or a night cruise. In December, you can also book a Christmas cruise to admire the waterfront holiday lights or watch New Years Eve fireworks from the water.

Brisbane’s Riverside Attractions

Many of Brisbane’s most popular attractions are located along the river’s banks. For the best views, take a ride on the Wheel of Brisbane, or hike up to Kangaroo Point Cliffs. On the South Bank, you can take a swim at the Streets Beach lagoon, browse the weekend Collective Markets, and visit the Queensland Maritime Museum. In the evening, head to Eagle Street Pier for dinner or drinks looking out over the illuminated riverfront.
