The Basics

Thanks to its waterfalls and animal exhibits, the Waterfall Gardens are among the top day trips from San Jose. If you have your own transport, it’s best to book advance tickets to the nature park. Otherwise, full-day tours—both private and group tours—are available with transfers from San Jose. Some tours combine a visit to the Waterfall Gardens with nearby attractions, such as Poás Volcano National Park, coffee farm tours, and boat trips on the Sarapiqui River.

Worth your time!
We had great fun during the whole day. We saw 3 different attractions, the coffee plantation, the volcano and the amazing la Paz waterfalls. Take some rain jackets, as you may experience some rain.

Day Tour to Poás Volcano, Café Doka and La Paz Waterfalls
We took this tour and it was incredible! Our tour guide, Will, was so nice and well informed. He taught us a lot, starting with the coffee plantation, and all the way to the animals in La Paz Waterfall Gardens. We were only 3 people which made it so personable and enjoyable. I highly recommend this tour! It is definitely worth the price!

While we purchased tickets ahead to avoid the line, there was no line when we arrived. The butterflies were delightful. While it is sad to see animals in cages, it did allow us to view up close animals we later saw in the wild. The highlight were the waterfalls. They were magnificent and so full of power this time of year. The property was neat and clean, and our whole group agreed that it was well worth the time and money.

Beautiful place

La Paz Waterfalls
The waterfalls are beautiful and the buffet plentiful. The pineapple drink in the buffet is not good. As many fruits as there are in Costa Rica, the buffet could offer a better beverage selection. I have a hard time believing that all the animals are rescues. Even if they were, the space is confined. The poor oxen are sustaining a cart all day where people can climb. This oxen activity should be eliminated.

Coffee Experience, Poas Volcano and La Paz Waterfall Gardens
This was a great way to see a lot at once. The waterfall place also has a small animal park/ sanctuary which was a nice bonus. It was great learning about the coffee industry in Costa Rica, seeing nature and the waterfalls, and the volcano was very interesting. It’s a good option if you have limited time in the area.

Day trip from San Jose to Coffee Plantations & La Paz Waterfall Gardens
A great experience with an excellent guide-Miss Francia! She made everything fun, even in the rain. Be prepared for a steep trip up and down the stairs when viewing the waterfall

Coffee Experience, Poas Volcano and La Paz Waterfall Gardens
A very full day beginning with the tour of the coffee plantation. The volcano was interesting even if it was not visible. (Check the weather reports. Warm clothes, umbrellas, and ponchos might be a good idea.) The gardens and waterfalls were spectacular. The stairs and level of physical activity might be challenging for some. Great day!

Really awesome half day tour. There was a nice little workout in at the end. Pleasantly surprised with the lunch option and impressed by the variety of sights.

The beauty of the waterfalls made it for me. It was a very nice trail, and a bit of exercise as well.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • This is a great stop for families with children as even younger kids can manage the walking trails.

  • Wear shoes with a good tread to manage the sometimes slippery trails.

  • The trails are well maintained, but several sets of stairs mean that not every area is accessible to strollers and wheelchairs.

When to Get There

The dry season, from December to April, is the most popular time to visit Costa Rica. If you visit then, be sure to secure tickets in advance, as popular attractions and tours fill quickly. Find lower prices, fewer crowds, and a bit more rain from May through November—when the waterfalls and forest are especially lush.

Outdoor Activities in the Central Valley

Rushing rivers and emerald-colored coffee plantations make the Central Valley one of Costa Rica’s scenic gems. Don't miss white-water rafting the Pacuare River (Río Pacuare); hiking around the crater of Irazu Volcano National Park; and soaking in the natural hot pools at Tabacon Hot Springs. Try to make time to visit coffee farms in the area too, such as historic Doka Estate.
