Tortuga Island (Isla Tortuga)

The Basics

While a mix of activities, such as hiking, canopy tours, and pickup volleyball games keep visitors well entertained on land, most travelers visit Tortuga Island for its waters. The volcanic reef surrounding the island is home to diverse wildlife, such as moray eels, spinner dolphins, and octopi—plus three shipwrecks—which make it a great spot to snorkel or dive.

Tortuga Island is an ideal day trip destination, with day trip cruises typically running from San Jose and Jaco on mainland Costa Rica and allowing visitors to glide past some of the 23 islands scattered around the Gulf of Nicoya. Opt for a glass-bottom boat or sea kayak tour for a chance to admire the underwater scenery without getting wet

Friendly staff, perfect day trip
The staff was extremely helpful and friendly - my grandma relies on a walker or wheelchair to get around. The staff was able to safely get her on and off the boat, onto the beach and would frequently check on her. Tortuga Island was beautiful and the perfect day trip!

Daniel and Marcos were delightful and very attentive. Served fresh cut fruit on the boat ride over to the Island…stopped in the way to snorkel. Served a great lunch on an uncrowded beach…. Would highly recommend….

We had the best experience ever with Isabella and the crew. The captain was fabulous and the mate was so much fun. They were very accommodating and made our experience amazing. The island was great and the snorkeling even better. Would absolutely do it again in a heart beat.

FANTASTIC TIME

Full Day Tour to Tortuga Island from San José
Whatever you’re doing stop and book this! The beach was beautiful. The boat was a party, lunch was delicious. Bring a cooler if you want, you can bring snacks and drinks on the boat as well but they offer some. All other reviews that say they had a bad time had to be the grumpiest people ever. We had an amazing time from beginning to end. Recommend bringing your own breakfast though. 1000/10.

Excellent All Day Trip from San Jose

Full-Day Tortuga Island Cruise from San Jose
This was an excellent all day trip from our hotel in San Jose (Marriott Hacienda Belen). We were picked up at 5:45am and brought back to the hotel by 8:30pm. The coach bus was comfortable. 2 hour trip to the coast. 2 hour boat ride to the island. Same coming back. The breakfast was good; though light, so I recommend you bring something to supplement. Drinks on the boat bar were good. The island is stunning and we were on there for 5 hours. Did the snorkeling and banana boat activities (for extra fee). Both were fun and worth the nominal fee. Gift shop with shirts, sundries, and sunscreen was on the island. They accepted credit cards. Paid for a wifi password and it was worth it. Lunch (included) was more than expected: salad, potato salad, rice, chicken, and fish. Tasted good and did not leave us hungry. Cash bar on the island was good too (nice that you could start a tab on the boat in the morning, continue it to the island, and then continue it on the boat back!). The ONLY downside to the trip was the location of the volleyball court. It was literally right in front of our beach chairs (chairs provided by our tour). I can't tell you how many times the ball hit people trying to relax. Other than that it was really a perfect trip. Bring your own towel. There were some street vendors selling kabobs and a small convenience store selling snacks before we got back on the bus home. I entertained 9 co-workers and 14 clients. I would recommend again!

Tortuga Island Cruises From San José
The best part was certainly the super service offered by the crew on board and on the beach! And the real 5 hours spent on the island. The island is nice, but I expected actually a better, clear water.. It was very dirty instead for a Caribbean island.

Trip with a loud music and dancing
Tatiana_J, Dec. 2021
Full Day Tour to Tortuga Island from Jaco
Pro‘s: +the Staff is really great, positive, funny, Interactive and pays attention that you really enjoy the fun trip Con‘s: - the music was a bit too loud and listening to it 3 hours in each direction assumes you like it. But you can to the other side of the boat where it is quite - we witnessed the red tide : water had algaes and was not clear, snorkeling was limited -Tortuga Island is just a smaller beach… you cannot walk across the island
