The Basics

Haleakala sunrise tours with round-trip transportation included are the most popular way to see the crater, and save the hassle of navigating to the volcano’s summit in the dark. Many tours also include sunrise-viewing passes for Pu’u’ula’ula Summit, the highest point on Mt. Haleakala, while sunrise bike tours transport you to the peak from where you can enjoy the view and ride back down.

Alternatively, dodge the pre-dawn crowds with daytime trips, guided hikes across the crater floor, or full-day excursions to the crater and other destinations within Haleakala National Park or places such as Iao Valley and the Road to Hana.

Haleakala sunrise, not to be missed!

Haleakala Sunrise Best Self-Guided Bike Tour with Bike Maui
The guides were very safety conscious and kept us on a good schedule for the entire event. We were never rushed and had plenty of time to take in all the sights we desired. Every guide was very knowledgeable of the history, lore and details of Haleakala Crater and the Hawaiian Islands in general. The bike ride down the crater was fun, safe and easy to navigate on our own. Even then, the guides kept an eye on us and provided assistance, if needed. Highly recommend!

Haleakala Maui Sunrise Tour with Breakfast
Easy pick up at our hotel … COVID confirmation of vaccinations for all participants … an expert professional guide and importantly driver to navigate the road switchbacks up to the Haleakala Summit … Preston our guide was a personable, effective historian and guide … without a tour of this type access to the sunrise hours in Haleakala National Park is limited and difficult to obtain …

The team at Maui Helicopter Tours was top notch. From scheduling to safety to the pilot. The pilot was impressive with his knowledge of the Maui origins to the explanation of the views he flew us over.

Haleakala Sunrise Best Self-Guided Bike Tour with Bike Maui
Such a great experience! The 4am sunrise tour stops at the crater to watch the sunrise. You end up on the bikes by about 830 and ride down at your own pace. You have until 3pm to get the bikes back. We were done by 11am, and that included a leisurely coffee stop. The bikes were well maintained, helmets were serious, and rain jackets and backpacks were provided if wanted.

Private Haleakala Summit & Stroll from Kahului
Had the best experience with our tour guide Dayne. He was very knowledgeable and funny. Great personal tour.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • There are no gas stations or outlets to purchase food within Haleakala National Park.

  • Some facilities at the summit are accessible to wheelchairs and strollers, including the Park Headquarters Visitor Center, Haleakala Visitor Center, and Hosmer Grove picnic area.

Exploring Upcountry Maui

Upcountry Maui, the region around Mt. Haleakala, offers plenty to do after a sunrise crater tour. Head to the town of Kula to walk through lavender fields at Alii Kula Lavender Farm, stop by a Maui winery, or visit Hawaii Sea Spirits Organic Farm and Distillery, the makers of OCEAN Vodka. You can also stop by the western-themed town of Makawao to enjoy some of the region’s best boutique shopping.
