Destrehan Plantation

13034 River Rd, Destrehan, LA, 70047

The Basics

See Spanish and French architectural influences, listen to costumed tour guides talk about the daily life of those who ran the plantation, and watch demos of historic trades such as candle making, open-hearth cooking, and indigo dyeing. Destrehan also offers a tour focusing on the region’s marginalized people, including German farmers, Acadians, enslaved Africans, and Native Americans.

Some guided tours from New Orleans combine a visit to the plantation with an airboat swamp ride for a full day of sightseeing.

Destrehan, Yes; Swamp Tour, No for me!

Destrehan Plantation and Swamp Tour Combo from New Orleans
The Destrehan Plantation tour was excellent. The docent was fantastic. We wish we had more time to spend there. The swamp tour was just okay. If you want to see alligators then it may be your thing. We saw no other wildlife. There were many people on this trip, and it was a hot day. I just was not impressed, but I’ve seen alligators before in the wild. I would highly recommend the plantation tour if you love Louisiana history. It is very evident that all their employees love their jobs!

Destrehan Plantation and Large Airboat Tour Combo from New Orleans
Both tours were great. Evelyn expertly navigated history that can be challenging to present at the plantation. She told the story of the plantation with accuracy and empathy all while being interesting and along a good time frame. The fan boat ride was a blast! My wife had never been on one and she loved it! Our driver was a wealth of knowledge, citing a love of the area that he had developed throughout his life as a local and an appreciation for the conservation of the area.

Our guide was very knowledgeable she was a history major and we enjoyed listening to her very much. We would’ve liked more postcards of the places in the mansion. And the slave cabins.

Destrehan Plantation and Large Airboat Tour Combo from New Orleans
This was a great tour for everyone. Plantation was interesting with a good tour of the main house and an interesting story of the revolt. Could use more time to wander the grounds in your own. This plantation is not the most developed but it was great learning experience for us. The airboat is the way to go. Lots of fun on the swamp tour. Dewey was lots of fun and a quick talker with lots of info.

Everything was very well organized. Our tour guides were very knowledgeable and entertaining at the same time. The plantation tour was an amazing trip to the past. Swamp tour was filled with interesting information about swamp habitat. Our Capitan Reggie was amazing. He showed us alligators of different sizes. Told us interesting facts. Very educational tour for adults and kids alike. Highly recommend.

Destrehan Plantation and Large Airboat Tour Combo from New Orleans
As an African American I have never been to a plantation before, so to actually see how my ancestors contributed to the fabric of this nation gave me a greater respect of the strength and faith they had. The swamp tour was fantastic, I wish I would have chosen a warmer time but our tour guide was amazing. He explained everything and found our group some gators. I highly recommend this tour.

The tour guide who gave us the history of the mansion was great. The lady who gave us the history of the museum needed to slow down. But overall it was an enjoyable experience.

Destrehan Plantation and Small Airboat Combo Tour from New Orleans
Airboat tour was awesome. Seen lots of alligators. Biggest was about 10-12 ft. Very knowledgeable about the area, vegetation and animals both. Definitely recommend. The plantation tour was good but felt rushed. Didn’t have time to look around at the other buildings.

What to Know About Antebellum Architecture

Antebellum mansions are characterized by a symmetrical exterior, large pillars, a balcony that wraps around the house, and a big center entrance, as well as geometric gardens that complement the boxy style of the house. Inside, you’ll find sweeping staircases and a formal ballroom. Some of these homes were damaged or destroyed during Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
