Lake Atitlan (Lago de Atitlán)

The Basics

Whether setting sail on a boat tour, exploring lakeside Maya villages, or hiking through Atitlán Natural Reserve, there are plenty of options for discovering Lake Atitlán. On the northeast shore, the lively village of Panajachel is the starting point for most visitors, but Lake Atitlán tours also run from Antigua and Guatemala City. In addition to taking in views of the beautiful lake, adventure tours offer a more active experience, including kayaking excursions, sunset bike tours, hiking, rock climbing, and even paragliding over the lake.

Incredible! My guide was phenomenal. It was just the two of us and he was so kind, knowledgeable, and interesting. The Lake is beautiful, and the towns are charming.

Lake Atitlan Villages Tour
Excellent experience. Our guide (Joshua?) was fantastic. Kind, funny, and happy to please. He has great English and all of the stops were excellent! One of the best things we did in Guatemala. Joshua was also considerate of everyone's safety and clearly takes his job seriously. Thanks for a fun time for our whole family!

Visit Three Mayan Villages - Lake Atitlan
What an amazing experience! We came away from our beautiful day with so much understanding of Guatemalan culture and history! While we toured coffee, chocolate, and textiles, we also spent time off the beaten path that we never would have found on our own. Our guide was kind, funny and full of knowledge! Definitely recommend if you come to Guatemala!

Lake Atitlán Sightseeing Cruise with Transport from Antigua
Excellent service, the boat ride in the lake was absolutely stunning, Mikor was super friendly. The visit to the towns was brief but not rushed. There's not much time for eating until the last part of the tour so make sure you bring snacks if you want to eat something on the way and make sure you have had breakfast before they pick you up. Overall a highly recommendable tour.

Full Day Collective Tour To Lake Atitlan + Panajachel + San Juan +Santa Catarina
Winston is the best! He is extremely knowledgeable and was able to provide historical context on almost all aspects of society. He was patient and let us go at our own pace. He also gave the best traditional food recommendations.

Lake Atitlan Day Tour From Antigua
My driver Osmen was on time and very informative the whole trip. He had a great recommendation for a great breakfast on our way to the lake. Our tour guide Juan Diego was very knowledgeable about the different Mayan villages and the history of Guatemala. He had a great textile class for us setup in the Village. He spoke at least three different languages and was really able to give us a lifetime experience.

Lake Atitlán Sunset Tour
This was such an awesome ATV Tour around Panajachel. I highly recommend it as it was the perfect length. My tour guide Joshua was very knowledgeable and personable throughout the various stops we made. We even stopped at a cultural center to get snacks and do some shopping. He has perfect English and was good at checking to make sure I was at a safe distance behind him while we drove all the up a mountain and back at night.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The easiest way to explore the lakeside villages is by boat, and local ferries run from Panajachel to most destinations.

  • The only ATM is located in Panajachel, and most villages only accept local currency, so stock up before you head out.

  • The main transport options around Lake Atitlán are small boats and tuk-tuks, so pack light as there’s not much space for heavy luggage.

  • Swimming in the lake is possible at designated areas.

The Villages of Lake Atitlán

The liveliest place to stay is Panajachel, while tranquil San Marcos is known for its yoga resorts and laid-back atmosphere, and San Pedro is the party hub for backpackers and international travelers. To experience local Maya culture, head to San Juan, known for its traditional handicrafts; visit Santiago Atitlán to learn about Maya traditions; or browse the market stalls in Chichicastenango or Sololá. If you really want to escape the tourist trail, visit the tiny villages of Tzununa or Jaibalito.
