The Basics

There are several options for exploring the grand basilica. See it as part of a Paris city tour or on a walking tour of the atmospheric Montmartre neighborhood. You can also book a guided tour of the lavish interiors to see highlights such as the apse mosaic, the grand organ, and the crypt. Visitors can also climb the 234-step spiral staircase to the top of the dome for panoramic views of the entire city, including the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame Cathedral.

Wandering around the haunts of past artists & authors...
We've visited Montmarte on our own in previous years but joining the walking tour under "Kit" was an eye opener! Kit is very knowledgeable regarding all the famous artists and writers that lived in Montmarte. He will will walk you past the previous haunts of Picasso, Van Gough, Renoir, J.D. Salinger, Gertrude Stein and others. His stories bring the past to life. Kit is also an artist so his perspective is one of appreciation of this historic neighborhood and its living past! Thanks, Kit!

Paris: Montmartre and Sacre Coeur Private Tour for Kids and Families
Our tour with Agathe was excellent. She made sure we knew where to meet her at the start of the tour. During the tour we learned so much about Montmartre and enjoyed our time exploring this part of Paris.

Paris: Montmartre and Sacre Coeur Private Tour for Kids and Families
Having a guide to visit a neighborhood makes such a huge difference. Our guide, Agathe, was thoughtful, engaging, and full of interesting stories. We gained so much more insight than we would have ambling around on our own. Unfortunately, the day we went was so crowded that we ran out of time to go inside Sacre Couer which was disappointing. But we loved our tour, nonetheless.

Guided Tour of Sacré-Coeur and Montmartre
We had a special private tour. So we had the full attention of the tour guide. He was very friendly and showed us secret places where it's best to eat and what we can expect at which place.

Tatiana was a great guide for this adventure! She knows history and has many interesting stories to share. She was especially responsive to our two 11 year olds in our family group and sought to bring them in to the activity. Our experience was enriched by her presence.

It was a wonderful tour. A little too much walking for me, I’m 72. The tour guide did a great job. Learned slot of history.

We had the best time in Monmarte with Tina. She knew everything about Montmartre as she lives there, was very well-spoken, her English is perfect and her knowledge about the history and stories was incredible. We had our two young teenage daughters with us and they adored her! Highly recommend.

Guided Tour of Sacré-Coeur and Montmartre
I think the tour guide makes your tour and Julien did not disappoint! The tour consisted of my husband and me and one other couple. Julien started off by giving us the history of Sacre-Coeur. He then brought us into the church and was very respectful of the request for silence. He pointed out several things and had notes on his phone for us to read. He also walked us through Montmartre and gave us so many factoids. We really enjoyed this tour and highly recommend!

This was the first of two tours we took though Babylon Tours. I highly recommend the tours provided by Babylon, as they have great tour options, excellent tour guides, and very detailed and clear instructions to make sure you have everything you need for the tour. We had the pleasure of touring with Lili. This was our first tour during our trip to Paris, and Lili made it an extremely enjoyable and memorable experience. Thank you Lili!

When to Get There

The basilica is open daily all year round, but it can get crowded in peak season, so opt for an early morning visit to avoid the crowds. For budding photographers wanting to capture the views, the most flattering light happens just before sunset, although note that it can be busy at this time.

A Walking Tour of Montmartre

The Basilique du Sacré-Coeur is one of the most memorable sights of Montmartre, but the bohemian ‘village’ has plenty of other attractions. A walking tour means you can explore like a local, stopping by famous landmarks such as the Moulin Rouge and the Artists’ Square; follow in the footsteps of artists like van Gogh, Monet, and Picasso; and explore the many shops, galleries, restaurants, and cafés.
