Paris Catacombs (Catacombes de Paris)

1 Avenue du Colonel Henri Roi-Tanguy, Paris, Ile-de-France, 75014

The Basics

A Catacombs tour takes you 135 feet (20 meters) below ground to explore this subterranean world of skeletal remains. You’ll cover just under one mile (1.5 km), which takes about 45 minutes. The Catacombs of Paris aren’t usually part of standard city tours, so they’re often experienced on a standalone tour. Book a skip-the-line ticket to bypass the queue, or make your sightseeing even easier by selecting combo admission to both the Catacombs and the Eiffel Tower.

Deathly delightful!
What an absolutely fantastic tour!! Our guide was intelligent, humorous, and informative. She handled all our questions well and we enjoyed the VIP access to restricted areas. We even got into deep philosophical conversations about death, dying, and life! We highly recommend you do any Pere Lachaise tour in advance of this one as they tie in together well.

Paris Catacombs Semi-Private Tour with VIP Access
Daniel was funny and knowledgeable. He really made the experience fun and enlightening. He also helped the few guests having claustrophobic issues by assuring them of the safety and escorting them to wider areas.

The stories… the guide was so knowledgeable! I wasn’t aware of how many people were buried in the catacombs and the story of how it started and continued. It was a truly eye opening and deeply moving experience.

Self-guided tour in Paris with Skip the Line access to The Catacombs of Paris
This was a great tour. Don’t show up earlier than 10 minutes before your scheduled tour or you will have to walk around and waste time.

We had a great tour of the catacombs with Michelle on one of our first days in Paris. She was incredibly knowledgeable and kind! The catacombs are unbelievable and a must see while in Paris. Highly recommend this tour and our guide Michelle. She even gave us some tips for navigating the metro which saved us countless times in France!

Paris Catacombs Ticket with Direct Access Tour
Very interest historical tour through the former limestone mines under Paris turned into Catacombs in the late 1700’s. Eerie tunnels full of thousands upon thousands of femurs and skulls. Highly recommended. May be a bit difficult for those taller than 6’4” as you may have to stoop through some areas. There are a lot of stairs as you descend at the begins and ascend at the end.

Paris Catacombs Reserved Access Tour
Seamless entry, easy to find. Timed tickets limit wait times. An amazing one of kind experience. The audio-tour was a nice feature. Not handicap accessible and a lot of stairs, so anyone with injury or mobility issues will not be able to do this activity. The floor is slick, uneven and dirty, (it's a catacomb) would recommend good sturdy shoes.

Self-guided tour in Paris with Skip the Line access to The Catacombs of Paris
I think we have saved around 2 hours of queuing with this purchase. The museum is brilliant. Very unusual and with a lot of history behind. The audio guide gives some curious details and I really enjoyed the city self-guided tour!

Addy our guide made the experience well worth the trip in the walking in their long tunnels low ceilings, multiple steps but overall very very interesting. She made the Special section even more informative! Well worth the VIP tour!

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Buy a ticket in advance to avoid waiting in a long line; visitors are limited to 200 at a time.

  • You may want to bring a layer, as the temperature is 57° F (14° C) in the Catacombs.

  • There is no cloakroom, so bring only what you want to carry with you.

  • Wear comfortable walking shoes—you’ll go down 130 steps and up 83 steps to return to street level.

  • The Catacombs tour is not for everyone—you will be underground and see human bones, so it's not recommended for those with sensitive disposition or young children. And unfortunately, the site is not accessible for those with limited mobility or recommended for those with heart or respiratory problems.

When to Get There

The Catacombs are open every day except Mondays and some bank holidays. The experience is the same by day and in the evening, as you’re underground and the lighting is artificial. For fewer crowds, book a morning visit.

Other Things to Do in the 14th Arrondissement

This section of Paris is not the city’s most visited, as it’s away from the Seine near the southern edge of the city limits. If you’re making the trip to visit the Catacombs, take advantage of being in the 14th to check out other attractions such as the 56th-floor observation deck of Tour Montparnasse or Montparnasse Cemetery, where writers and intellectuals such as Charles Baudelaire, Jean-Paul Sartre, and Simone de Beauvoir are buried.
