Australia has its fair share of weird and wonderful beasts, from crocodiles and dingoes to koalas and kangaroos. But when it comes to experiencing its sea creatures, nothing comes close to spotting a mighty whale—or an entire pod. Here are some options for whale-watching tours from Perth.

When to Go
The west coast of Australia is situated on the aptly nicknamed Humpback Highway, the annual migration path that circumnavigates the globe, and Perth is an ideal base from which to witness the world’s biggest whale migration. The main whale-watching season in Perth is between September and November, when over 35,000 adult whales and calves make their way south to the summer feeding grounds of Antarctica.

How to Go
There are a number of popular viewing areas in and around Perth. Set sail from Hillarys Boat Harbour for a 1.5- or 2-hour whale-watching cruise along the Sunset Coast of Western Australia, where the waters teem with pods of whales. Alternatively enjoy a Swan River cruise from Perth to Fremantle and spot dolphins, pelicans, and black swans.

What You’ll See
Humpback whales and southern right whales inhabit waters all around the Australian coastline. Few animal sightings are as impressive as spotting these gentle giants leaping out of the water and swimming alongside the viewing ships. With humpbacks reaching up to 50 feet (15 meters) in length and weighing up to an incredible 48 tons (43 Imperial tons), this is one photo opportunity you won’t want to miss! Other common sightings include seals, dolphins, and seabirds.
