The Basics

The gardens of Versailles are famous for their spectacular musical fountain shows and evening fireworks displays, held throughout the summer months.

Most visitors opt to discover Versailles on a half-day tour from Paris. With wait times lasting up to two hours, it’s worth booking skip-the-line entrance tickets if you plan to visit both the palace and gardens. You can explore the gardens on a self-guided tour, but visiting with a tour guide can be helpful if you have limited time or want to learn more about their history.

Versailles Palace & Gardens Skip-the-line Guided Tour
Sophie was fantastic. She was engaging and incredibly knowledgable of French and Versailles history (she studied hard during COVID). The linkup was super easy as the check-in was right across from the train station. I recommend the RER train from downtown Paris - inexpensive and a nice ride.

Versailles Palace Skip the Line Audio Guided Tour with Gardens Access from Paris
Our female driver was fun, funny, friendly, and kind - plus a great driver! The van still had the new vehicle smell. Highly recommend. The audio tour was helpful. The palace itself is huge and looking quite tired and it needs a thorough cleaning inside and out. Having said that, it is still spectacular. The murals, paintings and architecture are outstanding. U can rent golf carts for 38 euro per hour and cruise around the massive grounds. We'll worth the additional cost. Enjoy and have fun!

Versailles Half Day Trip from Paris with Audio Guided Visit
We went on a chilly Sunday morning. Was a smaller group. Pickup was easy to find. Guide and driver were informative and helpful. Trip was short to the Palace. Due to covid we practically had a private tour. It was my third time visiting and it just gets better. Plenty of time to sight see. Quick trip back to Paris and managed to see a few more things later that day.

Versailles Palace Skip the line Guided Tour from Versailles
The Guide was excellent. She is very knowledgeable, her English language is perfect and she gave us time to take pictures and answered all our questions. We missed the first part of the tour because of the traffic but she spent extra time with in the end to explain what we missed. Great service.

Versailles Palace Guided Tour with Gardens & Fountains Show from Paris
The tour was a bit rushed. Fabio our guide was good but we had some late comers that delayed some of the tour. PLEASE RESPECT others and be early rather than late I personally would’ve liked more garden time so if you just want to see Versailles this is great but if you are wanting to explore you’ll need a different or self tour

Versailles Palace & Gardens Skip-the-line Guided Tour
Tour was amazing ! Johanna was a great guide. Even though it was the hottest day 40 degrees C/100 degrees f. Johanna kept a smile on her face and gave us so much information at versallies. This is my second Versailles tour so I thought I knew everything but Johanna provides us with so much information I didn’t know ! Starting location was east to find taking the train. Make sure you arrive with plenty of time. The tour leaves promptly.

Private Giverny & Versailles all Day Tour from Paris Including Lunch
Our guide Clemence was excellent. She was extremely knowledgeable and pleasant to spend the day with... The day's order was flipped without our knowledge, so we started at Givenchy and ended at Versailles. We were a little crunched for time, but Clemence was wonderful and gave us a lot of information in a very short timeframe. Also, the lunch at Givenchy was outstanding (just one added benefit).

Versailles Domain Guided Day Bike Tour with Palace Entrance from Paris by Train
David was an excellent guide…he made the tour very enjoyable. The combination of walking and cycling was great and a side trip to the market for a picnic lunch was delightful. We are both in our mid 70s and pretty active so we enjoyed the pace. Gardens of the palace are gorgeous. We definately recommend!

Versailles Domain Guided Day Bike Tour with Palace Entrance from Paris by Train
I think the best way to cover all the bases at Versailles is definitely with a bike tour. We toured Versailles on a very hot day (97 degrees) but the bike ride made it feel way cooler. We had a picnic by the water canal and the breeze made it so peaceful. Our tour guide showed us around and at the end we were dropped off by the entrance of the palace for a self-tour.

When to Get There

The Versailles Château Gardens are open year-round, but by far the most popular time to visit is in high season (April to October) when Musical Fountains Shows, Musical Gardens, and Fountains Night Shows take place. On show days an admission fee is charged, and it’s best to visit early in the morning or just before closing to avoid the busiest periods. Visiting in low season means smaller crowds, but for conservation purposes the fountains are switched off, the groves are closed, and many of the statues are covered.

Stride down the Royal Walk, gaze out across the Great Lawn, stroll around the Orangerie, and admire Marie Antoinette’s Grand Trianon and Petit Trianon palaces. Additional highlights include Apollo’s Baths Grove, the Mirror Pool, Ballroom Grove, the Neptune Fountain, and Apollo’s Fountain, which looks out across the Grand Canal.
