Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar (Basilica de Nuestra Senora del Pilar)
The Basics
Study the basilica's baroque facade on a walk through the Plaza del Pilar, and discover surrounding sights including the Goya Monument, Roman walls, and the basilica’s co-cathedral, La Seo de Zaragoza. For a more intimate glimpse, head inside to see the revered wooden image of the Lady herself, as well as frescos by the city’s most celebrated son, Goya. The church tower provides panoramic views of the cityscape.
Things to Know Before You Go
The basilica is on the the Marian pilgrimage route and is popular with worshippers from across the world.
Zaragoza reaches desert temperatures in summer, so bring a hat and sunglasses when exploring the uncovered plaza.
Wheelchair users are able to access the basilica, but there are no on-site adapted bathrooms.
Admission to the basilica is free, but entry fees apply to the museum and tower.
How to Get There
The Plaza del Pilar is a 20-minute bus ride from the Zaragoza-Delicias railway station; get off at Mercado Central and follow Avenida de César Augusto north for 10 minutes. Some multi-day tours include the pilgrimage destination on a comprehensive sightseeing itinerary, with round-trip transfer included.
When to Get There
Avoid the heat with an evening visit, taking advantage of summer's extended opening hours to absorb views of the basilica by night. Be aware that the church is an active place of worship and runs regular masses. Visitors are welcome to join, but exploration is not allowed during service times.
The Bombing of the Basilica
As you explore, look out for two unusual additions to the church’s interior displays: two of the four undetonated bombs that were dropped on the church and plaza during the Spanish Civil War. That they didn’t destroy the entire temple was considered to be nothing short of a miracle.
