This full day adventure of the Big Island of Hawaii begins on the Kona coast, where you’re picked up from your Kona or Kohala hotel, and driven north on a scenic journey past historic Parker Ranch—which has operated as one of the largest ranches in America since 1847.

As you pass through the ranching town of Waimea, watch as the landscape changes from pastures to green, tropical rainforest, as sweeping views of the Hamakua Coast start creeping into view. During a stop at Waipio Valley lookout, marvel at the way the vertical cliffs seem to explode from the green valley floor and hear the tales of how King Kamehameha was raised in this valley as a child. The adventure continues as you wind your way down the Hamakua Coast, past roadside towns with singsong names until you reach Akaka Falls and Rainbow Falls.

Make your way back toward sea level at Punalu’u Beach, where you’ll take a stroll on a black-sand beach and search for Hawaiian green sea turtles. Head next to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, before rounding the southern tip of the island, the southernmost point in America. Look out for Kealakekua Bay, the spot where Captain Cook was killed in a skirmish with Native Hawaiians.

Stop at a Kona coffee farm to learn about the coffee growing process and walk through a lava tube.

Finally, your tour finishes back in Kona with a drop off at your hotel, where you’ve earned the right to plop on the bed and relax after the full day adventure.

Please note: Depending on weather conditions, your tour may operate in reverse order.

See it all in a day

Only on Big Island for a couple days and wanted to see volcano national park in black sand beach. Signed up for the island in a day tour. Driver was Robert and he managed to keep us entertained for almost 12 hours. Besides what we wanted to see we also visited a coffee plantation, a local doughnut shop, a lava tube and a couple of beautiful waterfalls Wailuku State Park and Akaka Falls. the company does provide a box lunch at the black sand beach(in the shade) and Robert gave the history of the islands. The man talked for about 10 of the hours and drove over 300 miles. The trip is exhausting as it is what it says Big Island in a day. You don't miss a thing. If your only there for a short time I recommend doing it, it's too much to cover on your own. Yes you don't spent much time at the volcano or the Black sand, but the time is divided evenly enough so you you get a taste of the island. There were all adults on our trip so i can't tell you how children/teens would do for a long time so think about that before you sign up

Traveling around the whole island to see all it has to offer. And the tour guide Robert was great at telling stories and the history of the island as we went along. The volcano was awesome to see and walking through the lava tube was so cool. The waterfalls were beautiful.

A Big Island Journey

Wasabi Tours Hawaii provided us with a wonderful day of Bid Island sites and island history. This is an very long tour and you will get a sampling of several locations and cover the entire island. First couple of stops at the coffee farm and bakery are a nice way to break up the long ride to Black Sand Beach and support the local economy. Once beyond that you are on a tour with a small group. You will have a little time at Black Sand Beach, Kilauea Volcano, Rainbow Falls, Akaka Falls and the Waipi’o Valley Overlook. Our guide Tyler shared a great deal of facts about the island’s geology and even more about the history. He has great respect for the Aloha spirit and Huna and lead us on a spiritual journey around the island. You must know this is a long day and weather and wildlife is unpredictable. You could do all of these things on your own and take more time but you certainly will not leave the day with a better understanding of the culture. Thanks Wasabi and Tyler for a great experience.

Robert, our Wasabi tour guide, was great! He was very knowledgeable about island history and all the sights we saw: Kona coffee farm, Donut shop, Punalu'u Black Sand Beach: saw sea turtles, had a delicious lunch at ocean, (plate lunch), Hawaii Volcano National Park, Volcano field walkabout, Volcano Tubes, Akaka Falls State Park, Rainbow Falls, Waipio Valley Lookout! We saw breathtaking scenery while Robert described background about how these sites were formed by nature, provided detailed history of the Hawaiian islands, provided restaurant recommendations, best way to go back and see our favorite sites again with advice on best way to spend our time, and obviously did all the driving of our comfortable Mercedes tour van! He provided snacks, drinks, detailed islands history, and detailed background on sites we saw.
