Start your day with hotel pickup or make your own way to the boat dock at Great Sandy Strait Marina. Step aboard your stable and comfortable vessel: a 58-foot (18-meter) power catamaran that carries a maximum of 49 passengers.

Your boat glides out of Hervey Bay to the Great Sandy Marine Park, which is renowned as a playground for humpback whales during their annual migration to the Antarctic. Along the way, enjoy a delicious morning tea that consists of hot scones, jam and cream, and mouth-watering profiteroles. Complimentary tea, coffee, and filtered water is available throughout the day.

Look for whales as your boat approaches Platypus Bay, which is located between Fraser Island and the mainland. Your skipper provides informative commentary about the whales as you watch for fin splashes, tail slaps and impressive breaches where the whale rises up out of the water. Sightings usually include several pods of whales along with dolphins, turtles, and sea birds.

Your boat is equipped with a hydrophone that permits you to hear whale vocalizations if you're lucky. You also get panoramic views of the western beaches on Fraser Island while you tuck into a lunch buffet onboard the catamaran.

During the return journey, nibble an afternoon tea with a platter of fresh fruit and cheese. Upon return to the dock, your can hop on board the complimentary shuttle to return to your hotel, or simply make your own way to your next destination after a fantastic day of whale watching.

It was a great day from start to finish. The crew were friendly, professional and informative. We were transferred to and from our hotel, all very easy. Our cruise was at the end of the season and we saw two separate mothers and their calves. Seeing one mother and her calf breaching was amazing. It was a beautiful and relaxing day out. Lunch, Morning and Afternoon teas were very good. Thank you Keith, Toni, Sue, crew and Lyle. We look forward to returning next year.

The whales!! Oh my goodness. It was so amazing and awesome. They are majestic and beautiful and we had so many to watch. I want to go back and see more. This might have to be one of our yearly events now. Added to this, the captain and crew were funny, friendly, and approachable. The food was great and it was a stress-free way to see the whales.

The crew of Freedom 111 were excellent in every way.. very comfy boat with lots of seating and viewing range..captain is very knowledgeable with a quirky sense of humour.. he navigated the waters expertly and placed us in the midst of whales sleeping, breaching, playing .. Scones jam and cream and chocolate eclair the perfect morning tea.. chicken ham and assorted salads a very tasty lunch.. very fresh fruit for afternoon tea.. superb!! Highly recommend this cruise .. we will do it again when next in beautiful Hervey Bay.. and a must visit for breakfast or lunch is Enzos .. right in the beach.. perfect location and excellent food.. Mexican restaurant also very good.

Whales in platypus bay entertained us on a calm blue sky day

9.30 depart time suited us & so did the 6 hour time period. Having done shorter whale watching trips at Hervey Bay previously, we deliberately chose Freedom's 6hr one because we knew it would give us a longer period of time actually at Platypus Bay. After about 1 hr of travelling out, Mitch over the course of about 4 hours found us various whales to watch. We viewed a range of behaviours - individuals and some small groups - each was up to something different. Breaching, sleeping, come real close to check us out, also a youngster mucking around, oh & a solo whale that was hanging out with a dolphin. And then, it was time to head back to the harbour and Mitch took us back via the west coast of k'gari(Fraser). Perfect weather - AND - the whales showed up for us...hurray. The catamaran was great - fit for purpose, plus like you'd expect, clean tidy & comfortable. The crew excellent. Oh and yes food + tea/coffee included kept us fed and watered. What we'd hoped to see on our blue sky day on the calm waters of Hervey Bay was fulfilled - tick tick tick. Happily would do Freedom's 6hr whale watching trip again.
