What To Expect

Meet a guide at your hotel for a 7:30am departure, then travel to the La Fortuna area for a hike near the Arenal Volcano (pickup is at selected hotels only, see Booking Details for more information).

Follow a trail that crosses lava flows from Arenal’s 1968 eruption, when the long-dormant volcano sent rocks, lava, and ash across the countryside. Bring your camera, as you’ll have great views of Arenal Volcano National Park and the surrounding rainforest.

Pause for a buffet lunch at a nearby restaurant, then slip into pools that are naturally heated by volcanic activity. This is the perfect time to relax surrounded by waterfalls, rainforest, and tropical birds, all with Arenal Volcano for a scenic backdrop.

After a full day of hiking and hot spring, meet the driver for the return trip to Guanacaste, with a break in Tilarán town for dinner. This tour concludes with drop-off at your original departure point.

Arenal Volcano riding tour

The tour begins in our stables to continue through “El Silencio Reserve”; a quiet place with trails that gradually climb through cattle grazing fields to patches of forest. You will enjoy the large shade trees as well as a variety of flora and fauna. We will visit the lagoon crater and the Arenal Volcano viewpoint, two of the most impressive attractions of the area. From the viewpoint, you can take breath-taking pictures upon your horse with the volcano as your backdrop. Here, you will also observe impressive rock mountains; product of past eruptions of the volcano. If everyone knew the benefits of horseback riding as a recreational activity, we would not have enough horses to go around. Feel how each gallop increases your self-esteem, self-confidence, and love for living creatures, and even make you forget the existence of cell phones, except to capture a good photograph. Even Sigmund Freud could not achieve the same results as a simple horseback ride !

La Fortuna Waterfall

After this relaxing ride, we will return to the stable, where our transportation will be waiting to take us to the next part of today’s adventure. We will drive 30 minutes to the La Fortuna Waterfall where we will begin with a 300 meter (984 ft.) walk down steps and comfortable rest areas to the base of the impressive waterfall. Your expert naturalist guide will share interesting information about the geological aspects of the rock formations and the history of the tall basalt columns that gave rise to this waterfall. The trail ends right in front of the powerful 70-meter (230 ft.) waterfall, which is the perfect place to take impressive photographs. You can swim in the river at the base, just not too close to the falls. The combination of these two activities makes for one unforgettable experience.
