The Maui Butterfly Farm Tour!

Mahalo for coming and feeding the butterflies!

It is unfortunate that this guest seems to have missed the first 15 minutes of the tour which is when our guide would have clearly explained that the two incredibly rare Hawaiian native butterflies only occur above the 3000’ foot elevation in Hawaii and do not survive well down at sea level or in the hot Olowalu sun which is why we do not raise them at the farm. Their host plants will also not grow at sea level. As far as we are aware, there are no breeders in the State of Hawaii and we do not mention anywhere on our website that we breed these two so we’re unsure as to why this guest would think we would. It is unfortunate that the multiple types of the butterflies that we have on the farm were overlooked (the guide would have gone through these different types in the initial speech also). As we also explain, the main purpose of the butterfly farm is to teach through hands on learning, to teach how important all butterflies are to pollination here in the islands and as the Monarch is in 99% decline throughout the US, we focus on these butterflies the most as they are very happy to be hand fed and handled by both children and adults alike. We encourage all guests to arrive on time so that we can share all of our butterfly knowledge with them and to have a fun, hands on learning experience.
