Begin this Niagara wine country bike tour in Niagara-on-the-Lake, where you are fitted with a touring bicycle that’s equipped with bottle carriers and a handlebar bag. Set your own perfect pace as you set out along quiet, country roads lined with vineyards, fruit stands, and markets.

Visit a series of pre-selected vineyards that are biking-distance apart and taste wines at each destination. Ample sunshine and a cool climate give the Niagara-area grapes intense flavor and sweetness, and Niagara-on-the-Lake is considered the birthplace of Ontario wine production. The VQA-certified vineyards include Reif Winery Estates, Caroline Cellars, Marynissen Estates, FrogPond Farm Organic Winery, and Riverview Estate Cellars.

Any purchases you make along the way will be picked up and delivered to the starting point. This self-guided tour is well-suited to riders of all experience levels, and most cyclists complete the circuit in five hours or less.

Our story begins in 1996 when Jens Gemmrich bought an orchard that had not been farmed for several years. After clearing apple, pear and peach trees, vines were planted and nurtured organically producing the first vintage in 2001. Ten acres of vines, Riesling, Cabernet Franc and Merlot surround the pond at our Larkin Road vineyard.The soil is sandy, silty loam over silty-clay, stony till deposited during the last ice-age, producing wines with distinctive mineral character. Twenty more acres of organically farmed vines, Gamay Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Vidal and Chambourcin are located around the corner on Line Four. The soils there are richer, silty loam to clayey loam and produce more fruit forward wines.

The ride was wonderful and well laid out. I wish the office was opened earlier to get an earlier start . The bike was in rough shape the seat fell down during the ride and the chain came off. No one at the shop upon our return had to wait on attendant to return after 4:30.
