Cultural Immersion via the outdoors!
Lindsey_N
, Aug. 2022
Irene provided the most educational and culturally rich experience to Cotopaxi. More than just a hike and stunning views. We learned about the geography, the indigenous people, the flora and fauna, Ecuadorian cuisine, she let me practice my terrible Spanish, and she provided amazing guidance for the ascent up the mountain. Truly wonderful!

We enjoyed the whole experience including walking up Cotopaxi and eating Guinea Pig for lunch (our choice). Jennifer explained what was about to happen well and was very patient with us when we were late for the bus! She shared lots of interesting information about what we were seeing and the places we were visiting.

We had a fantastic time with Erika and Jimmy - it was a fun and informative tour! We really enjoyed discovering Cotopaxi and learned so much about the country. Highly recommend! P.S. Erika was very kind to provide hiking tips to my friends who had not been exposed to high altitudes before. Thank you, Erika!

Irene our guide was delightful. Full of life and information. The communication before the tour was excellent and the pick up and drop off was exactly spot on.

Erica was a fantastic guide! I wouldn’t have made it to the top without her. This is definitely a challenging trek but the experience is great even if you don’t make it to the top.

Cotopaxi Trip

Great tour and guide! Really friendly and full of information. Beautiful landscapes! No fault to the tour, but my wife and I got altitude sickness with the walk to the top therefore I would just suggest others be well acclimated to the altitude before taking the tour. The guide was super patient and helpful which still made the trip pleasant even with the headache!

Physically challenging but an extremely fun tour!

Before the positive review, here is one negative side of the tour: on the website, it claimed that the maximum capacity for the tour was 10 people. However, we ended up having 14 people, which made the pick-up / drop-off experience extremely lengthy. Positive review: The tour was packed with different sites and surprises. We started off the day by touring the south Quito in the car, and we headed to the National Park. We didn't waste any time on touring in unnecessary sites/areas, and the guide was incredibly helpful and vibrant when explaining the geographic features of the volcanos. I was enchanted by her energies, and I believe that the other tourists did too. As we were climbing the Cotopaxi, I had a hard time adjusting to the altitude. The drive/photographer Charlie was extremely friendly and kind, and walked with me until we've reached the refuge. He also volunteered to take professional photos for everyone who was in the tour, which made the experience even more memorable.

Cotopaxi tour with too many unrelated stops
Louise_P
, Feb. 2022
We can highly recommend going to Cotopaxi, however, a longer hike would have been nice and we had two stops on the way that was not mentioned and was unnecessary.
icon Response from Host , Feb. 2022
Hi Louise, we are glad you recomend Cotopaxi is a beautifull mountain. About your comment let me teel you that when you booked the tour you new the itinerary and also the timing for the hike and you decided to take the tour. Of course if you wanted to make a longer hike you needed to make an specialiced tour because you need special equipment and training. We are sorry that you make this bad comment because you are not rating the service also you exagerate and say too many stops and we make one stop before entering the National Park to buy snack and restrooms and inside the park you visit the lake, the small museum about the volcano and the you go to the hike, those stops are highlights inside the park.

Our guide Mauro was excellent, he was enthusiastic and very knowledgeable about the environment and hiking and made sure everyone was doing ok at altitude. We had a superb day visiting Cotopaxi, the lunch stop after was great and the whole day was a great success.

Absolutely incredible time

This tour was absolutely amazing. We booked for Christmas and ended up having a private tour since there we no other people signed up. Mauro was an excellent guide with lots of knowledge about Quito, the park, and other areas of Ecuador we are traveling to. Hiking over to the glacier was amazing and with just three of us total, we were able to move pretty quickly which was lovely. The weather was perfect and we could see almost every volcano in the avenue. We were a bit confused because in the tour description it says lunch is included, but in the “what to expect” it said no meals included. We messaged to confirm and brought snacks to make up for the lack of included meals. We did end up getting lunch at the cafeteria near the end of the tour and it was delicious for $5 each meal. We would without a doubt book this trip again. This was our fifth day in Quito with a few other days of hiking prior which really helped for the altitude. This is NOT a first day at high altitude excursion.

Really fun day! Marco was a wonderful guide and very good with explaining the Cotopaxi volcano and so many other interesting things about Ecuador. The scenery is so beautiful! The hike to the Cotopaxi base camp is tough only because of the altitude. But it’s worth the effort. Loved it!

Francisco is a very good guide. The hiking was great as Cotopaxi was mostly clear of clouds and no wind while we were there.

Our guide Erica and driver were great. Extremely enthusiastic and knowledgeable. The views all day were gr8 from lookout in South Quito on way up to Cotopaxi and from the lake. Wonderful late lunch/early dinner at local restaurant that had beautiful views of Cotopaxi. See a wolf in wild was also a special event.

Good to see the volcano but bad tour planning g

We really enjoyed visiting add hiking Cotopaxi however this tour was the most poorly planned tour among many that we went on during our 25 day vacation in Ecuador. I will start with the positives first. The tour guide was very nice with good English skills, very patient and kept with everyone's pace. The major problem we had was the timeline and not a having clear information on when lunch was going to be served. We started the tour around 6:30 and after everyone was picked up we stopped for breakfast around 7:30 on the way to Cotopaxi. However we didn't get to sit down until a little past 4pm for lunch. By then so many of us were starving, getting lightheaded after a long and active day without knowing exactly when the lunch time was going to be assuming lunch would have been served around lunch time. And then we were notified that we had to pay for lunch separately which wasn't clearly mentioned in the itinerary. No snacks or drinks were served on the bus and we weren't told how late we were going to eat lunch, so we could have packed or bought something to snack on. Planning and clear communication is essential for tour companies. This was our first tour and we took many other ones during our stay and everything was clearly disclosed with us and all day tours covered lunch and snacks on time and everything was well planned. I understand eating is not a big part of sight seeing, but at least for us and some other tourists that day having starved for so long and not getting clear information on the food part of the trip definitely lowered the experience for us, especially after learning how well other tour companies handled this issue

Dear Lauren I am glad that you enjoyed our tour, about the food let me tell you that when you bought your tour we mention on the itinerary that food and drinks are not included. At the begining of the tour we make a stop early in the morning so you can buy food and snacks. Our guides suggest you to buy snack because we will have a late lunch. Also when you get to the refuge you have plenty of time to buy food, they sell soups, sandwichs, chocolate and so on. The planning on our tour was correct but maybe you didn´t bought the food even if you had the options.

What an amazing experience! Cotopaxi park itself is incredible and worthy of a million photos, not to mention the volcano itself. Be prepared for windy and chilly weather (hats and gloves are much appreciated), with rain on and off, but the weather changes often. I'd recommend hiking poles, and real hiking boots are a must. Take your time, your guide will be great and patient with you, so don't feel bad if you don't make it up all the way (we didn't), take lots of pictures, and enjoy yourselves. You've earned the stop on the way back for a nice meal and a little canelazo with some homemade moonshine! Ask for Francisco as a guide, he was incredible with us.
