Overview

Tuscany has been known for its pottery since ancient times, and with this hands-on class you’ll enjoy an introduction to traditional Tuscan “majolica” in just a few hours. Join a local artisan in his family-run workshop outside the town of Montelupo to learn how to work raw clay, fire, and glaze your own work. Once cooled from the kiln, your piece will be shipped directly to your home.

We will meet in the shop, easily reachable by the Montelupo-Capraia train station in three minutes by walking (there is also a car parking there, if needed)

This was one of our favorite experiences while we were in Florence back in April! Matteo was an excellent host, very friendly and made the whole trip an incredible experience. We enjoyed seeing the factory, getting to know how the pottery is created, and then of course creating our own pieces with Matteo's father. I can't recommend this experience enough -- it's a little outside the city, but it's a refreshing change of pace and you will get the most attentive, custom experience of any tour you can get in the area.

We had a tour of IMA factory with Mateo, who is an excelent guide and then we had a lesson with the master, his father, with his aid we made a bowl, his mother was also there, a real nice family with a history of pottery. We had a fantastic experience.

Unique and personalized tour of a generations-old master ceramics factory, including the showroom filled with beautiful & historic pottery. Then, a private pottery lesson from the owner-operator. We met the entire family, but were led by Matteo, who's cheer and passion for the ceramics business and Montelupo's history was infectious. We did not go 2 minutes without laughing or learning something new, and got to create beautiful pieces of pottery to bring home. Would recommend this experience to anyone, at any range of ceramics experience. I'm a novice, and my partner has been doing ceramics for 4 years, and our lessons were tailored to each of our skill levels.

I booked this experience as a surprise gift for my wife, who's been interested in getting into pottery, and it was easily one of our favorite, most memorable things we did while in Italy! Mateo and his family are so kind, welcoming, and eager to teach you about their craft and their lives. Mateo took special care to explain every aspect of traditional Italian ceramic-making from start to finish in detail, and the tour of the factory was awe-inspiring! Getting to learn from Mateo's father, the master potter, was such a fun and fascinating experience as well! He was extremely patient and a blast to learn from, cracking jokes while also teaching the various techniques necessary to create a simple ceramic piece. I highly recommend this experience to anyone who is a train ride away - I wouldn't trade it for the world!

It was a great experience! I was told all ins and outs on ceramics making in Montelupo, saw beautiful artwork, was guided by matteo who received me as family member, and I was taught how to make a vase from clay myself by his father who is a ceramist. Also a tour through a pottery fabric where i could see ceramics made and handpainted. I can certainly recommend this experience! Everybody was really nice and wanted to explain a lot.. Beautiful art work is made here too!

If I could give this experience more stars I would!!! It was the best experience I’ve had in my life. We met Matteo at his store. He greeted us with a lot of enthusiasm and a big smile. He gave us a tour of the factory where they produce for companies all over the world and we were taken through the process from beginning to end. We also had the opportunity to video and talk with someone of the people in the factory who were equally as nice. We visited the showroom for a tour and had the chance to see so many different designs and placed a special order Afterwards his father taught / helped us create something and we laughed ate and took photos I can begin to describe how beautiful the experience was an equally so his lovely family They welcomed us to their town, shop and studio and I hope all of you book this experience

This experience is an absolute must-do and will be a memory I will never forget from my time in Italy. Matteo and his family were so welcoming and sweet. The tour of the pottery facility was so interesting and one of the master potters showed me how to create some attachments for the pottery. It was a beautiful facility. I learned so much at the warehouse. The second part of the experience was creating your own pottery piece. This was so fun to work with the clay and learn some techniques. The best part of the day was being welcomed by Matteo and his family. They were such good people and really have a passion for art and pottery and teaching. I could not recommend this tour more!! Please book it and spend some quality time with a lovely Italian family creating art :)

We cannot say enough good things about this experience. Matteo was a wonderful guide, showing us from beginning to end how pieces are made. His family has been involved in making ceramic for multiple generations. His father was excellent with teaching us how to make our own pieces! After taking the 20-ish min train ride from Firenze to Montelupo, we walked 5 min to the ceramic shop to meet Matteo. From there, he took us to the factory and showed us how everything is made. It was a wonderful experience and something we will remember!

An excellent choice as a birthday present! It was a unique experience with a friendly atmosphere. The tour through the factory gave us a deep insight into the craftsmanship of the traditional tuscan pottery-makers. The course, guided by the master, even succeeded our expectations. When we came in, Matteo (the guide) was excited already. He gave us a tour arnound the shop and factory. The people who work there, where more than happy to tell us how to work with ceramic. They gave us al the time we need to ask al our questions. Personally we enjoyd the tour around the place more than the workshop because of the excitment from everybody. We orderd also a personal ceramic. It was a lovely day.
