Needs improvement

Viator has to do better. We have booked several trips from Viator and this is the first time we felt like second class citizens. There were options other participants were able to select that were never available. Imagine a tour of 50 people and only 5 of us were unable to participate in the cheese tastings. With the cost of the trip I would think it might be included. Additionally everyone but the same 5 were booked on a train trip. We were given the opportunity to add this at a cost of 28.4 Swiss francs. This is not the guide’s fault or company by Viator. Needless to say for $300 I expected better service. The cheese was experience was less than optimal and we felt so rushed we did not even enjoy it. Everyone was rushing to the cheese tastings and we were left with lack of direction on what to do

This was a wonderful tour and experience. Our guide and driver were both excellent. The guide was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic in his interactions with the guest. Scenery was breath taking. Highlights were the chocolate factory and the medieval castle. I definitely recommend this tour and guide.

Disappointing ++
NadaFairris
, Mar 2022
Journey to Gruyère took far longer than planned as we had to divert to Lausanne to pick up two extra passengers. Chocolate factory a great disappointment as no humans seen working at any stage of the manufacture. Gruyère cheese factory even more of a disappointment as the only process seen was on a film loop. No time to see the castle or take the train trip…all because we had to leave early to drop off the two Lausanne passengers. No water on board the coach so a very dehydrating trip. All together not worth the money and not to be recommended to anyone.

Good morning, We are very surprise by your comment as 99% of the passengers love this tour. The chocolate factoy is a real attraction with the scenery, decoration , raw materials. Of course, it's not all hand made but you cannot fnd any chocolate factory handmade that tou can visit nowaday or even exist. The cheese museum explains everything about our AOP. We don't leave early as there is no train in winter. The pick up in Lausanne is usual. We feel very sorry you are disapointed.

Day trip to Guyeres
Debra_S
, Sep 2021
There was enough time to see and do what you wanted on your own. The Cailler Chocolate Factory was fun with ample samples. The city of Guyeres and cheese factory was nice . Time for a good fondue lunch and then train ride to Montreux .

Hello Debra_S, Thanks for your complete feedback. We are very pleased that you appreciate your whole day at Gruyeres and then at Montreux. Hope to see you soon :)

Excellent Chocolate Tour - but rushed
Krista_Y
, Aug 2019
Normally, I take the train instead of an organized tour. However, these things were a bit far and I didn't have much time so I booked a tour. The chocolate tour at the Cailler factory was fabulous. You go through "rooms" but..."rooms" are an understatement. This was like a miniature Disney ride without the "cars"...each "room" had a scene that lit up and had animated items popping up with mood music. You could listen to the dialog in your chosen language. At the end, it was more museum like, where you could learn more about the people/roles of folks who make the raw ingredients and then the chocolate. Note that we were alotted 1 hr at this place. I think by the time we got into the rooms etc 40 mins had passed. So I didn't get to enjoy the "museum" part more than 10 mins and grabbed some tasting chocolate along the way. Note that the first chocolates were individually wrapped. the others were on a tray and some folks may not be comfortable with the unwrapped ones. Though, there was a lady supervising to minimize people touching, but not taking. I normally would have skipped the gift shop, but in this case, I needed to buy some for gifts. So that's where the last moments were spent...grab chocolates, grab insulated bag (yeah, you need this in the summer so that your chocolate won't melt!), luckily no lines at the register and ran to the bus. We needed at least 15 more mins there. Then, we went to the cheese factory and it was "museum like", less impressive compared to the chocolate factory. Ideally, I would have gone to the cheese factory first because I think I would have been more impressed seeing it before I saw the chocolate factory. They gave you a prepacked sampler of Gruyere cheese with different ages...I think it was 4 mos, 6 mos and 8 mos. Something like that. The older cheese was firmer and stronger tasting than the younger cheese. It was good none the less. Note that I'm glad I ate it there vs taking it back to the USA because I forgot that dairy might be restricted. Then, I was glad I didn't do the tour with the Golden Pass train. We had 3 hrs in the village of Gruyeres (an uphill walk from the cheese factory). The tour guide told me to have Raclette at the Hotel de Ville. It was great. Note that the Golden Pass train route is much longer than the section you will take on this tour. Not worth it...go on the scenic train when you can do the entire length.

We upgraded our trip once we were on it so that we could have the fondue luncheon and the panoramic train. Glad we did! Our tour guide, Yolanda, was a lot of fun and very knowledgeable about all things Switzerland. Gruyere is a beautiful village.

Great trip overall. The tour description was a bit off and we were told we bought the basic package but could upgrade if we wanted to. It was the 2nd trip we took with this company, in 2 days, where we had to buy up. The basic package had a tour of the chocolate factory with tastings, a tour of a cheese factory, with tastings, a drop off in Gruyeres, a bus ride back to Montreaux. The additions included a tour of a dairy with more cheese tastings along with meat and bread, wine and finally we got to make fondue. We were glad for that experience as we'd had not so great fondue the night before and this fondue was so much better. The addition also included a ride on the Golden Pass. As said, the additions were well worth it but were a bit unexpected. A lot was done this day and it was a great experience.

Maggie was our tour guide. She didn't provide enough explanation and narrative during the bus ride to the various locations. When she did speak, descriptions were provided in English and then in Spanish, or vice versa. By the time she got to describing the site in the 2nd language, we had already passed the site of interest. The visit to the cheese factory was a waste of time. The tour was each person walking through the various exhibits, of which there were not many. Not very informative. Maggie suggested that we not purchase any cheese at the factory since there would be another cheese store in the village of Gruyeres. Instead of stopping at the cheese factory, I would've preferred more free time at the village of Gruyeres. As it was, we only had enough time to have lunch and not enough time afterwards to explore the castle.

This was a fab tour that we really enjoyed. Our guide wa very informative and told us lots of fun facts along the way. The chcolate museum was brillaint and really i as much as you want to sample as well as bing vry entertaining and interactive. Dont be put off by the fact it is owned by Nestle unless you boycott them of course as they give you all the prior history and the chcolate is of good quality. The cheese factory is so-so but Gruyere is brilliant- way more to do than we epected and we actually ran out of time. If youre going during th warmer months take a good bug pray as we had wasps bothering us! The reason for 4 not 5 stars is that w got the 'non-gold' package and there was quite a bit of pressure to upgrade. The gold version has some very cool things but includes a fondue which one of our party didn't fancy and you can't upgrade to individual extras. We all wanted to go on the train but couldn't do this without fondue so ended up just sitting in the bus for an hour so a bit frustrating for us but if you want a cheesier experience then do go for gold.

This tour was a definite highlight of our trip to Switzerland. We could never have experienced the delights of the spectacular Swiss Riviera, the unique quaintness of Gruyeres, the cheese tasting experience, the chocolate factory and its unfolding story as well as the train trip through the picturesque Swiss countryside without the professinoal guidance of this Viator tour.Well done!

I have to say, Maria might have been the best tour guide Ive ever had. She was very attentive and had great commentary. The tour was also very nice. The Cailier chocolate factory was like a Disney ride through the history of chocolate. I would have liked to see more of the chocolate being made but it was still a neat tour. The gift shop and chocolate is very good. I read a lot of people saying this is a Nestle factory so it's not that good. It is owned by Nestle, but it seems like they dont make your standard Nestle chocolate. This is higher quality and worth the price in my opinion. I picked up 100 Euros worth because I thought it was very good. This tour also takes you to a small artisanal farm where you have lunch with Fondue, meats, cheese, wine, and a local dessert. Everything was outstanding. I wanted to buy a little of everything. The village of Gruyeres was also very nice. It is very small so 1 hour is plenty of time to see EVERYTHING. The castle is very cool and the rest of the walled town is very picturesque. Then you take the golden pass train ride. The views coming back to the lake are spectacular. It's a very pretty ride. On the way back by bus, you stop in the Lavaux wine area. You pull off the side of the road at a small picnic area covered in vines. The view of the vineyards and lake are worth the stop. Maria served us a cup of wine from the area at the stop. It was a very nice day.

My husband and i took this day trip to Gruyeres on a Sunday. Maria, our guide, was excellent, very well informed and shared her knowledge about the places we visited. The visit to the Cailler Chocolate Factory and the tasting of such delicious chocolates, going round and having lunch in Gruyeres, a very lovely medieval village, the picturesque views of the country side, the vine yards and Lake Geneve as you go down to Montreux were marvelous. Travelling in an air conditioned coach and having a friendly guide like Maria, makes this excursion very recommendable to all those visiting Geneve.

We, myself and 4 teen daughters, loved this day exploring the countryside of the towns near Geneva. It was a full day of taking in the beautiful sights, learning about the culture and history and of course eating. We also took a ride on the bobsled down the mountain where we had experienced an amazing cheese fondue lunch. A truly authentic experience and Maria was a fabulous host/ guide.
