Well known by its moniker ‘the Little Red Train,’ the Bernina Express was designed to climb the Swiss Alps with ease. A testament to engineering work completed more than a century ago, the train is still able to complete the cliff-clinging Bernina Pass on a route that now has UNESCO World Heritage status.

Travel from Milan to Switzerland in the morning, and relax on your coach journey to Tirano. After some free time in the town, board the Bernina Express and gaze out of your window as the historic train passes through the idyllic stretches of Northern Italy and the Swiss Alps.

Ride over the spiral viaduct of Brusio, and along the Bernina Pass to Engadin. Watch the scenery change from windswept gorges and snow-clad glaciers to the chic chalets of St Moritz.

Hop off the train to enjoy free time in the town. An elegant vacation spot that’s popular for winter sports, St Moritz has a bounty of attractions to keep you busy. Stroll the lake, ogle the snow-specked mountains that ring the town, enjoy lunch or browse the local chocolatiers to sample Swiss chocolate. All food is at your own expense.

In the early evening, return to Milan by coach. Your tour of Northern Italy and Switzerland finishes with a drop-off at the start point.

Swiss or bust

I'm here for the real deal- finding the check in was super easy. Your guide was adorable and informative. I suggest eating before the trip or bringing snacks as the "bar stop" is sketchy as hell. But the bathrooms are free so yay! Sadly you only get 1 hour to walk the town in Switzerland. It says 2 hours for walking but thats a lie. I'd say that is the biggest negative. we literally had time for 2 stores and to eat lunch. Super sad we didn't get to shop til we drop but whatever, I got my chocolate! The train ride was pretty cool. Make sure you bring extra water as there isn't any on the 2.5 hour train or at the stop when you get on the bus. Overall nice tour just wish you had more time to explore Swiss.

Pick Another Tour - False Advertising
Alexandria_L
, Jun 2022
I usually never leave reviews, but I had to warn others after today's tour. Although the reviews are correct in how breathtaking the beautiful landscape is on the Bernina Express... The travel from Milan to St. Moritz and then from Tirano to Milan was HORRENDOUS. You meet at 7:15 am to then arrive in St. Moritz at 12:15 pm. It took 5 HOURS to get to St. Moritz, when it should only be a 2.5 hour drive from Milan. This was because they picked up MORE people than advertised on Viator. Our guide was not very informative and favored her Italian and Spanish customers. If you are American or English speaking, you will be treated as a second class citizen on this tour. We were only in St. Moritz from 12:15 pm to 1:30 pm. Then we took the Bernina Express from 2 pm to 4:30 pm. WE DID NOT GET TO EXPLORE TIRANO AS ADVERTISED! We went straight to the bus which then went from 4:30 pm to 9:30 pm!!! ANOTHER 5 HOURS HOME. Ridiculous. The amount of rest stops we took was unnecessary. I could see how this would be a nice activity if you are elderly because you do not have to walk a lot (A lot of people on this tour was over the age of 50), but if you are young and able, find another tour because this was a horrible experience. 10/10 DO NOT RECOMMEND! Save yourself the time and money.

Pick a different trip than this one and prepare for a long day

These is a lot here. First of all, the train ride is beautiful and worth seeing. Having said that, our experience on this tour was not pleasurable. We left on time from Milan with no issues and took the first part of our ride up to St Moritz (not Tirano on this particular day, we started on the other side). After a rest stop, we got stuck behind an accident on the road that cost us an hour of travel time, not the tour operators fault. To make up time, the driver drove in an unsafe manner; tailgating, honking at cars in front of us, and swerving through narrow towns at high speeds that caused him to have to slam the brakes when there was something around a tight corner, launching the bus occupants into the chair backs in front of them...multiple times. When we got to St Mortiz, we only had 90 minutes to get lunch and 'explore' (again, not the tour company's fault). It would have been nice to get an idea of where we could get a fast lunch, but we got no such guidance from the tour guide. On top of that, all the shopping stores were closed...we didn't get a heads up on that either. Our time was spent looking through the windows of closed shops and just happening across a small food store that sold sandwiches. The ride down the mountain in the train was very nice, although the mic system the guide used was useless. The guide didn't offer much in the way of history or a 'heads up' when a good photo op was about to present itself, and when he did try to say something, it was completely garbled. The tour says we would have time in Tirano 'to explore.' We didn't. We got off the train, went to the bus, and stopped at a church for 20 minutes. Thank goodness there was a small coffee shop next to the church and a number of us skipped the church and opted for coffee. On the very long trip from Tirano to Milan, we make a rest stop and the driver went to leave with a number of guests still in the facilities. The guide and the driver seemed to argue a bit over that. We took a number of tours while in Milan and this was not the only full day tour. It was, by far, our worst experience during our trip.

Long day but amazing views, train ride & mountains. St. Moritz is a charming ski village but not much was open. Being this close to the Swiss Alps, well worth the day trip.

Book it yourself, not worth the tour

Was quite disappointed that we didn’t get the panoramic windows on the train and when we asked the tour guide, he simply told us not this one and walked away. I will say that this train allowed you to open the windows and take better pictures without glare so it kind of worked out. St Moritz was essentially closed so it was pointless there. The travel time to get there and back to Milan was the worst part of this. I would recommend finding another way to get to the Bernina Express train as the train ride was breathtaking, but the travel time to get there and back through this tour is not worth it.

This is a great day trip - know up front it is a long day but the sight are amazing. We had time in St. Moritz to see the lake, walk around abit, and have great lunch with some amazing truffles for dessert. Then the train ride was beautiful! It only made me want to go back and see more of the Alps. I recommend this tour, guide and bus driver were great also!

Great day.. but it’s not the train they advertise

Long but enjoyable day. Our tour began with a long bus ride to St. Moritz. We enjoyed a couple of hours there and while it was a holiday and all shops were closed, we did find a nice restaurant to enjoy lunch. After lunch, we boarded the “Bernina express”. Here’s the rub, I knew we would be on the regular train and not the express with the big panoramic windows that were advertised because I read the reviews. So… I wasn’t upset, in fact, as a photographer, I was happy because the windows rolled down. Most other passengers were upset however, feeling mislead. I don’t blame them, but we were prepared, so all was good. The views were nice and the train stopped at all the stations along the way, so it made for a long day. We then ended our train ride and immediately boarded our coach back to Milan. Glad we did the tour and we had great weather!

Please do yourself a favor and don’t book this.
Marienne_I

Long story short, this is not the famous BERNINA EXPRESS panoramic train but a regular passenger train. It says Bernina Express in the title, but it’s really just a regular train that goes through the Bernina Trail. While still able to view the beautiful Swiss Alps, I paid $511.63/4 people to ride the BERNINA EXPRESS. I contacted Viator (who then contacted the supplier of the experience) with this complaint, and they stated that the experience is accurately advertised, saying that the purchase includes a second class train ticket. FYI, the Bernina Express also offers second class panoramic car tickets, so I assumed that that’s what I was going to experience. Instead, Viator and the supplier told me that the ENTIRE train is second class, aka it’s a regular passenger train. This train, by the way, is not air conditioned and took several long stops to board more passengers along the way. Despite numerous attempts of explaining and requesting a refund, I was turned down every time. Do yourself a favor—if you want to experience the Bernina Express, don’t be fooled by false advertisement like me and book directly on the Bernina Express website. Save yourself the time, hassle, trouble, and money.
