This activity will end right where it started. Please insert your accommodation address in Naples (hotel, b&b, airbnb) in the "Special Requirements" section when booking, then call the local supplier the evening before your tour after 7PM to know your pick up time and if your pick up will be at your accommodation, nearby, or at our starting point.
Your guide will collect you from your hotel or train station to kick off this Mt Vesuvius and Pompeii day trip from Naples. Venture into the ancient Roman city of Pompeii on a half-hour coach ride and learn the history behind the area that was infamously covered by ash nearly 2000 years ago.

Follow your guide on a walking tour of this UNESCO World Heritage-listed site and learn about Europe’s largest archeological grounds. Stop at the Forum, Thermal Baths, Vetti’s House and the Lupanare brothel. Your guide will offer historical context and insight into local life here back in 79 AD. Once you’ve explored the grounds, savor an Italian pizza lunch with your group before enjoying time to wander the shops.

Afterward, travel by air-conditioned coach to Mt Vesuvius and journey on a moderate hike to the top of the active volcano with your guide. At the summit, some 3,900 feet (1,200 meters) above sea level, take in panoramic views of the Bay of Naples. Roam around the volcano's mammoth crater and keep an eye out for plumes of escaping steam. If you prefer to skip the hike, you'll enjoy free time while waiting for the group, but the trip to the top is definitely worth the effort.

After successfully climbing the top of Mt Vesuvius, relax with a ride back to your Naples hotel or back to the port in your comfortable coach.
Itinerary
Stop At:
Pompeii Archaeological Park
After pickup from your hotel or the Naples train station, take a 30-minute drive to Pompeii, an ancient Roman city that was entirely destroyed by the sudden eruption of Mt Vesuvius in 79 AD. The largest archaeological site in Europe, today Pompeii is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. When you arrive, your guide will pick up your group’s pre-ordered tickets and lead you on a 2-hour walking tour of the fascinating grounds. Witness the destruction first-hand as you visit Pompeii’s most famous sites, including the Forum, the Thermal Baths, Vetti's House and the Lupanare brothel, giving you a glimpse into daily life during the Pax Romana. Today you can see shapes of objects — even bodies — that were buried beneath the volcanic ash and pumice.
Duration: 2 hours

Stop At:
Vesuvius National Park
After your tour, enjoy a pizza lunch with your group followed by some free time to browse the shops. Then board the coach and drive 40 minutes to legendary Mt Vesuvius. Embark on a moderate hike up the volcano with your guide. When you reach the summit at 3,900 feet (1,200 meters), you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the picturesque Bay of Naples from east to west. Peer down into the crater and see plumes of steam issuing from the sleeping, but still active, volcano! There is a rest point where you can choose to wait for your group if you do not wish to climb all the way to the top, but the hike is worth the effort. After your Mt Vesuvius hike, relax on the drive back to Naples in the early evening.

Amazing places but lots of waiting around

We were picked up on time but our guide on the bus was not too welcoming. We picked up other passengers and he didn't speak to us until we were well on the road. We got to Pompei within a short time and were introduced to our guide Maria, we were then told be 20 minute wait (No idea why). Maria was a fantastic guide and the reason the stars are so high, she was informative and funny. We were a large group but it was fun. Next we had to follow another female guide (Jucy I think) she showed us to where we dined and that was it, didn't see her again. We weren't told where to go or a time to meet after food but found initial bus guide for trip to Mount vesuvius, again another wait for about 20 mins, no reason as to why. On the journey there he spoke in several different languages despite tour meant be in English, we were gone by what he was talking about by time the English translation came. We got off bus and gave a time to return and that was it, no idea what lay ahead, it was steeper than expected with lots loose stones but worth the climb. We all arrived back to bus and guide was few mins late, then after no information again we headed towards Naples and he got off the bus at the train station leaving us on the bus alone with the driver and other passengers. Would not reccomend this tour unfortunately although perhaps another guide would have made it better. A little communication would have made it better.

Loved seeing Pompeii and the ruins. Our tour guide was great, the pizza lunch was delicious, the hike to Mt. Vesuvius was surprisingly high and steep. It was like hiking rocky loose sand. Definitely take a bottle of water and cash, to use the bathroom you have to buy something and only cash is allowed. We would have loved to have had more time in Pompeii, it itself needs a whole day. Would recommend this tour! It was a great day trip.

Very convenient! We took...

Very convenient! We took the train into Naples and were picked up right across from the station. Our only complaint from the incredible day was lunch was unorganized and we were not told what time to meet back up so we waited at the spot for the 45 minutes to ensure we didn’t miss the bus. Still would recommend just ask your guide when and where you need to meet if they are leaving you.

Amazing and understandable

The forum was the pinnacle. The amphitheater and “red light” house was also well preserved. The guy was fluent in English and completely understandable which is not always the case with the English tours I have been on

Maria was an amazing guide! She made the tour through pompei fun, engaging and informative. Usually I get bored on tours through ruins but Maria was very fun to listen to and kept a good pace.

Very well organized. Excellent tour guide in Pompei with interesting stories about the history. Also sufficient time to walk up Vesuvius (25 min) and walk around the crater. Definitely recommend! Also well communicated upfront on departure details.

Decent tour but highly disorganized
Amanda_K

I wanted to love this experience but I cannot give it a good rating. Pickup was fine, our bus guide was Rita. We arrived in Pompeii and met our tour guide. She was told that there were 30 people in our group and gave us 10 minutes to walk around the shops. My partner and I returned in 8 minutes and the group was already gone. We called Viator and they had another group leader meet us. Helga brought us into the ruins and we caught up to our group. We had to walk for 10 minutes before even meeting our group, so they must have left the meeting spot within 3 minutes. When we met our tour leader, she said that someone at Viator gave her the go ahead to leave with only 28 people. Strike #1. The tour itself was fine, but it felt rushed, we finished in 1.5 hours when it was scheduled for 2. The information provided was good but could have been better. Lunch was delicious. When we finished we were told to meet back in 10 minutes to go to Vesuvius. When we met in 10 minutes we were told to wait another 15 because we had to wait for another group to finish food. At this point it seems like at least three groups of tours were getting combined. When we met 15 minutes later, we were told to move to different buses and suddenly we had a new group leader. It was very disorganized and at this point we were significantly behind schedule. Strike #2. When we finally make it to Vesuvius, we are handed tickets and they all had different entrance times on them. I had 4:40 while my partner had 4:20. Another person in our group had 3:20. If we're all one tour, shouldn't we have the same tickets? NOT TO MENTION the tour is supposed to be 7 hours. That should mean a return to Naples by 5pm. When I booked the excursion I specifically asked the operator what is the latest we would return and they said 5:30-5:45. When we got off the bus at Vesuvius our new leader told us to meet the bus at 5:30 to return. THAT'S WHEN WE'RE ALREADY SUPPOSED TO BE BACK! My partner and I had a 6pm train to catch that we had no hope of making if we stayed on that bus. The solution offered to us was to skip Vesuvius and take a local bus back to Pompeii, and book a different mode of transportation back to Naples. Obviously this is not a good solution. We paid Viator for roundtrip transportation to Naples and now we were being told to pay out of our own pocket to find alternate transportation because their tour couldn't stick to a schedule. Strike #3. A number of other people on our tour had similar issues with coordinating after-excursion transportation. Luckily I spoke with our first bus guide, Rita, who seemed to be the most knowledgeable. We told her our situation and she worked with Helga to get us on a different bus that was expected to leave at 5pm with the hopes of being able to make our train from Naples at 6. We rushed up and down the mountain and didn't fully get to enjoy the experience because we were so nervous about missing our train. We did make our train, but only because Rita, Helga, and Andrea (our driver) made it happen. They worked their butts off to help us when Viator did nothing. Overall, we got the full experience, we did everything we were supposed to and that was good, but we were stressed out for much of the time. I guess I would recommend this adventure, but do not plan on being on time; expect it to be disorganized; always return to the meeting spot early. The only reason I didn't request a refund was because we were actually able to do all the activities and make our train home. I'm giving the tour 3 stars is because Rita, Helga, and Andrea were absolute rockstars!! I hope they are recognized for being awesome hosts.

Had a great day! The hike up Vesuvious was steep, but doable if you're in good shape. In Pompeii, our guide was Maria. She is knowledgeable and personable. We enjoyed the tour of the ruins. Would definitely recommend!

Not enough free time, Vesuvius was tough

Maria, our guide for Pompeii was fantastic-a great sense of humour, knowledgeable, and organized. My issue with the tour is it did not start at 10. Hotel pickup was at 10 and by the time we got to Pompeii, got organized, and got underway, it was after 11. We had a two hour tour, Maria was great, but there is a lot of waiting time at some spots as all the tours go through the same route and there are crowds. We had very little time to look around on our own and rushed through the area at the end where the plaster casts are. There was no time for the quality bookstore and shop as we had to get to lunch and prepare for Vesuvius. The hike up is not a hike it is a steep climb along switchbacks full of loose scree. It’s very windy and I was surprised we were not told what it was like. I have bad knees and am glad I took my poles as I would not have been able to do it, otherwise. The bus driver was a hero as driving up to and down from Vesuvius is not for the faint of heart. Overall, while the tour folks were great, there was not enough free time to wander-even 20 minutes, and it would have been nice to have more info about the climb up Vesuvius
