Pick up will be outside the dock of your cruise ship, driver will show a sign with your name on it.
Begin your day trip with pickup from your cruise port in Naples, where you meet your guide and travel to the UNESCO-listed ruins of Pompeii.

Upon arriving, embark on a guided tour through the impressive archaeological site, with stops at Vetti’s House, the Thermal Baths, the Lupanare brothel, and the Forum, each buried by volcanic ash during Mt. Vesuvius’ eruption in AD 79. As you go, hear the history of each site, as well as the full story behind the fateful day almost 2,000 years ago when the prosperous city was destroyed.

Afterward, relax with a complimentary pizza lunch, accompanied by a drink. Refueled, hop aboard your coach to Mt. Vesuvius for a climb to the summit with your guide. Soak up panoramic views of the Bay of Naples from the top, and walk around the crater at 3,900 feet (1,200 meters). Don’t be surprised if you see plumes of steam issuing from the sleeping volcano as you peer down into its depths.

Your day trip concludes with transportation back to your original departure point.

Worry-free Shore Excursion: We will ensure your timely return to the Naples port for this activity. In the rare event your ship has departed, we will arrange for transportation to the next port-of-call. If your ship is delayed and you are unable to attend this activity, your money will be refunded. Itinerary
Stop At:
Pompeii Archaeological Park
After pickup from your cruise ship dock, take a 30 minute drive to Pompeii, an ancient Roman city that was entirely destroyed by the sudden eruption of Mt Vesuvius in 79 AD. The largest archaeological site in Europe, today Pompeii is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. When you arrive, your guide will skip the line to buy your group’s tickets and lead you on a 2 hour walking tour of the fascinating grounds. Witness the destruction first-hand as you visit Pompeii’s most famous sites, including the Forum, thermal baths, lupanare, greek theatre and plaster casts of the bodies of Pompeii people, giving you a glimpse into daily life during the Pax Romana. Today you can see shapes of objects — even bodies — that were buried beneath the volcanic ash and pumice.
Duration: 2 hours
Admission Ticket Included
Stop At:
Vesuvius National Park
After Pompeii visit, enjoy some free time to browse the shops followed by a pizza lunch with your group. Then board the coach and drive 40 minutes to legendary Mt Vesuvius. Embark on a moderate hike up the volcano with your guide. When you reach the summit at 3,900 feet (1,200 meters), you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the picturesque Bay of Naples from east to west. Peer down into the crater and see plumes of steam issuing from the sleeping, but still active, volcano! There is a rest point where you can choose to wait for your group if you do not wish to climb all the way to the top, but the hike is worth the effort. After your Mt Vesuvius hike, relax on the drive back to Naples in the late afternoon.

Great tour

We didn’t realise we would be climbing Mt Vesuvius and although it was steep, it was well worth it. Pompeii was sensational but so much to see and take in we will have to go back.

Very efficient tour. There was very little wasted time. Make sure your shoes have good tread on them for the hike up Mt Vesuvius. There was loose gravel. There were little shops at two points up the mountain. They had drinks and souvenirs. You could pay with Euros or credit. Pompeii is very hot if you go in the summer. Buy a bottle of water before heading in.

Tour indimenticabile! ------------------------------ We had the most extraordinary experience, exceeding all expectations. Andrea was outstanding during our visit to Pompeii, stimulating our knowledge of the ancient Roman life, with respect to nowadays: an extremely interesting point of view to visit this enchanting place. Chapeau. Trekking on Mount Vesuvius is fascinating: we have learnt a lot thanks to the local guides and the view from the crater is breathtaking. Elisa was extremely competent and professional, the anti Covid measures all applied when necessary and the pick up offered by brand new mini van to limit the personal interaction. I loved this tour to bits! Big thanks to all.

Good Tour, minor flaws

The tour and the timing of the tour were great. You see the sites you need to see, you have a decent lunch and the we were back to our ship on time. The guides were knowledgeable and spoke clearly and the technology (microphones, etc) worked well. My only complaint was the lack of clarity on the meeting point to start the day. The port in Naples is insane when a ship arrives. Tour companies and taxis are climbing all over each other. There were not detailed instructions on where we would meet in this mayhem or how the tour would identify itself. So, one family was lost and late causing the whole tour to start about 15-20 minutes late. Other than that, I would certainly say the tour was well executed and would recommend it.

Be aware of what you are getting

We started out as a small group from our ship but then wasted 25 minutes waiting at the train station for a family of four. Once we got to Pompeii, we were merge with more people to form a very large group. Our guide did a good job of explaining things, but it wasn't at all what we thought it would be. Then more than 50 of us walked to lunch, which was one pizza or one spaghetti plus 1 drink. Okay, but not really great. They transported us to Mt. Vesuvius and dropped us off. If you wanted to walk to the top, fine. If not, you could set and wait. You could get water on the bus for 1Euro a bottle. Then they drove us back to the port. The best part was the pick up and drop off were right outside the port. It was great to see the sights, but you need to know what "all inclusive" means and what you do and don't get.

Great to see both of these, but it started way too late and gave too little time

This tour picked us up at our ship's dock at 9:45am, much later than every other tour we had on a 12 day cruise. We then proceeded to spend another hour picking up various other tour participants at hotels all over the city. The tour of Pompeii was a very nice overview, but if you really want to see it in depth, you will need more time. We then had a nice lunch and got to have original Neapolitan pizza and wine (there were other choices for those not wanting pizza). We then took a long drive to Mt. Vesuvius (the hike did not start at the bottom). We were given very little time to hike to the top, so it was rushed (and difficult, and I'm an experienced hiker). They put me and my family back on a separate van to ensure we got back to our ship on time (we had to be back by 5:30pm), which I appreciated, but that gave us even less time than everyone else. I would have enjoyed Vesuvius much more had we not been so rushed. This tour needs to start at least an hour earlier than it did.

Very well organized for a large group tour. Pompeii is an amazing place to visit and learn the history of and the views from Mount Vesuvius were breathtaking. The supplied lunch of pizza or pasta was delicious and much needed before the hike up Vesuvius. Our guides were both knowledgeable, courteous and kept the tour well organized.

Great day in Naples!

Our guided tour through Pompeii was thorough and at a comfortable pace. We then had a tasty, but slightly rushed, pizza lunch at a nearby restaurant before heading to Vesuvius. My only real complaint is that multiple tour groups were on the same bus, leading to some confusion. We started together and did Pompeii, after which we split into different groups for the afternoon, and combined with a different group from the morning.

The first part of the tour to Pomeii was great. The second part to Mt Vesuvius was rushed. Lunch was good. Need to make this a longer tour overall.

Pompeii and Vesuvius

We were very excited to visit Pompeii and Vesuvius. This excursion was disorganized and therefor rushed. Due to the disorganization we did not have adequate time at Vesuvius. We felt passed from one guide to another who seemed put out to deal with English speaking tourist. The sites were fantastic, but the tour was not.

We loved this tour! Our tour guide...

We loved this tour! Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and easy to understand walking around Pompeii, which was just an incredible experience. It did feel a bit rushed at times getting from Pompeii to lunch and then to the bus, without a lot of explanation of what we were doing. The view from the top of Mt Vesuvius was worth every second of the climb, but it was an intense climb and on a not awesome road. The path was all loose, uneven gravel, so be prepared for that. We were covered with dirt when we got back to the bus.

Our Pompeii guide was amazing!

I believe our guide was named Maria, but either way, she was funny, informative and very charming! We loved seeing Pompeii and after walking Vesuvius. However I would recommend people adhere to timelines, we ran late to Vesuvius and had very little time to get to the summit and back. Also recommend don't take pictures on the side a volcano while you are walking, bound to make yourself a sacrifice to the Gods by accident.

Disorganized but great hike

We got off the ship and waited with our group for the last family. A family of 6 who then didn’t fit on the bus. So we left them. I assume they went on a different bus. The bus was fine. The guide didn’t really keep us entertained. She didn’t go over any facts so we sat in silence for most of the time til we reached Mt Vesuvius. I proceeded to go buy the tickets So we waited for longer The hike was great although their was no guide arranged. When we asked for one he sat and began to show us pictures clearly not wanting to take us on the tour to the top. We left after 10 minutes sitting on the side since we only had 30 minutes left to reach the top. We made it and took pictures. Then went to lunch food and restaurant were great. Then our guide left and they made us wait for another group for over 30-45 minutes after eating. Was a waste of time. We could have spent at Pisa. The tour at Pisa was great. They got us to the ship just on time. The lunch and Pisa were great. A lot of wait around down time that was wasted because of their disorganization.

This is the most disappointing...
Heidi O
, May 2018
This is the most disappointing Viator tour I have ever taken. I certainly would NOT recommend it. From the meet up point by our ship, things seem disorganized - it turned out there were two groups. We had to walk a long way to meet the bus at the curb on a busy street. Then we drove around the city picking up others. So, we spent at least 45 minutes - one hour in transition before the tour even started. That is time we could have spent doing more meaningful activities. It was a cloudy, foggy day at Mt. Vesuvius and even though the tour said Pompei is visited first - the guide reversed the order. That was not in the write up that I saw. When I asked Viator customer service about this - they checked - and the tour company said sometimes we reverse it. Well they should make that clear! We were at Mt Vesuvius in the mist - could see nothing and at Pompeii in the crowds and heat. I think the reverse would have been better - I doubt the morning was more crowded than the afternoon. We waited at Mt. Vesuvius for over a half hour - for what that was not clear - we thought it was for the bus, but no after waiting for a long period, we walked back to the bus - again along the busy street and the guide did not really pay attention or direct us. Before getting back on the bus, I asked if we could have our tour ticket because I like to save them for my scrapbook and was told it was not possible. The guide needed them for the tour company. It seems a receipt from the park would be possible - I have never been told I could NOT have my ticket - which I essentially paid for. So, I had to take a photo of it! When we got to the parking lot at Pompeii, there was not explanation of where we were going for lunch - just that we would meet our guide. So again, a long walk to a restaurant that was okay. It is Pizza or Spaghetti - and it is all made up ready to go - this is a tourist place. From the pizza restaurant, we made our way across the street to obtain headsets for the tour of Pompeii. The headsets were not clear. The guide was very mumbled sounding and getting us into Pompeii seemed disorganized again - and again, no Ticket. Finally, I left the group and went and bought an audioguide and wandered alone. Overall, I thought the tour was a disaster. I asked for a refund because Viator says tours are guaranteed. Viator customer service checked with the operator who said, if the customer left the tour that was their choice, we provided what we said we would. I disagree - I found the tour disorganized, difficult to understand. The only benefit is that I got to see Pompeii - but at an outrageous cost. Do yourself a favor - book with a different company.

Wear your walking shoes and be prepared to walk on uneven stone roads. What a wonderful adventure into history. Loved our tour guide who wore high heel boots during our excursion. She gave us a super history lesson and was so much fun to be with this day.
