Your day trip from Rome to Orvieto and Assisi starts as you leave the city by coach, heading north along the River Tiber toward the region of Umbria, a picturesque piece of central Italy that neighbors Tuscany. After an approximate 1.5-hour drive, arrive in Orvieto, a hill town that seems to rise dramatically out of the volcanic rock it’s perched on and is known for its long history dating back to the Etruscans.

Explore town on foot, enjoying the Italian charm and passing by many churches, particularly Orvieto Cathedral, a Gothic structure that dates back to the late 1200s and is noted for its stained glass, sculptures and mosaics.

Back on your coach, continue across the rolling landscapes toward Lake Trasimeno, where you’ll stop for lunch. Then head to Assisi, a World Heritage–listed town famed for being the birthplace of St Francis of Assisi, a patron saint of Italy and one of the most legendary figures in religious history.

Take a walking tour of town to see sites related to St Francis’ life, including the stall where he is thought to have been born, his former home and the place where he vowed to dedicate his life to the church. You’ll also learn about Assisi’s other hometown saint, St Clare, one of St Francis’ followers. Visit both the Convent of Santa Chiara, named for her, and the Basilica di San Francesco, dedicated to St Francis, plus see other Assisi sights like Piazza del Comune, Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, the town hall and the Roman Temple of Minerva.

Return to your coach to start the drive from Assisi to Rome, stopping on the way in Santa Maria degli Angeli to visit its 9th-century basilica where St Francis is said to have worshipped. Your day trip ends when you arrive back in Rome.

This was a lovely day trip. Picked up at our hotel, comfortable touring bus. Orvieto is a quaint village on top of a plateau. Shopping and sightseeing. Lunch along the route to Assisi was good in comfortable setting. Assisi tour was fabulous, guided by a local resident. Stunning! We definitely recommend this day trip when in Rome.

The best day trip excursion by far! The town's are absolutely beautiful. The guide was patient with my Mom, as she is older and it took her longer to walk (she did keep up). The towns were quaint, the history rich and people in every town welcomed visitors. The local lunch was so delicious and we met some really great folks talking the tour with us as well. Orvieto had wonderful local artisan shops. Assisi was a very rich history and spiritual experience for me personally. The countryside is breathtaking. The tour is highly recommended, my Mother and Sisters totally enjoyed this experience.

Must-see Assisi & Orvieto with lovely guides

Love that the tour was early enough for us to experience a not-so crowded Orvieto. I was just bummed that the tower was closed until 10:30 AM which was the time we had to leave for lunch (it was good for the most part, but the pasta was a tad too salty). Assisi was fantastic. It's such a magnificent place with so much history and significance. Eleonora was funny and informative.

Our tour guide was wonderful, very informative, knowledgeable and good sense of humor. She was very good and I recommend her for anything she is part of. I am sorry that I forgot her name. It started with S and she had reddish hair and glasses. (Sorry, we really liked you too!) OUr tour was on All Saints day, Nov. 1,2019. It was very crowded but she kept us all together and in stride. It was beautiful everywhere and so much fun! Thank you!

One of the Worst day trips ever

The trips to Orvieto and Assisi themselves were adequate and enjoyable. The trip back to our hotel was a nightmare. First, the van we were in was old had no shock absorbers or suspension .leading to several times where the van was bouncing around so much our driver had to slow down to maintain control. Second, our driver and guide seemed to be lost when trying to find hotels, and after about an hour of searching decided to force us off the van at about 9:00 p.m. no where near to our hotel. They sent us up a side street in total darkness that dead ended into a park. We went back to where they dropped us off, and eventually with the help of several kind people were able to find our hotel. We found this quite unnerving given that we are unfamiliar with Rome, it was night time, and are in our late 70s. Fortunately, we are physically fit and were able to walk for 25 to 30 minutes to our hotel. The next day we went out to find where we had been dropped off. This location was approximately a mile and one half from our hotel. The staff at our hotel couldn't believe that this had happened. We travel extensively and this by far was our worst day trip experience.
