A frustrating start
Lora_W

4 stars due to miscommunication & last minute rescheduling but the actual tour & guide were awesome. I booked the 10:45am tour for June 4, 2022 for clients. However, when they arrived at 10:10 to check-in, they were told the tour was canceled as “obviously the Colosseo was closed due to Italian holiday, but they were lucky as there was space on the 3:45 tour.” The agency had my email address as well as my clients phone # - I set my alarm for 3:30AM my time to check for any emails re the tour & there were none, nor did my client receive a text or call. Firstly, if it was an Italian holiday & the site was closed, why were tickets being sold for that time frame & if it was closed unexpectedly, why were my clients or I not notified? This messed up their entire day & other things had to be rescheduled. When they did arrive back for the afternoon tour, it was not a small group as was expected but it appeared they had combined 2 tours. However, they did very much enjoy the tour, said it was very well done & the guide was very nice.

Gigi is wonderful

My wife and I made a mistake while booking this trip, but the office was kind and willing to accommodate us for a reschedule one month later. Today, we finally took the trip and it was really special. We had a great group of folks with our guide Gigi who made the trip really memorable. First, he remembered all of our names and was so very friendly. I’m convinced he knows everything about the history of the area (he’s a smart guy, having completed a pair of dissertations). The Colosseum is an amazing feat of engineering, and we are thrilled that we were able to see it from this perspective. We won’t soon forget it, and we absolutely recommend this tour to everyone! No shade on any other guides, who I’m sure are wonderful, but a tour with Gigi will be one to really remember.

Don’t use The Ultimate Italy guide

Avoid The Ultimate Italy operator at all costs!!!! Both the service and the tour guide were terrible and ruined a $454 adventure.

AMAZING tour, well worth the price tag

This was an amazing tour. I was worried it couldn't live up to the price tag, but I was wrong. Our tour guide, Lucia, was super fun and knowledgeable. As a trained archeologist, she was able to make the forum and the colosseum come to life - we definitely left the tour with a greater understanding and appreciation for those ancient ruins than we would have had we gone it alone. We started in the Roman forum, and spent about 1.5 hours there. Lucia provided so much context that we could practically see the original buildings in place of what now lies in ruins. She was also very attentive and answered many follow-up questions. After the forum, we spent 1.5 hours at the colosseum. We were able to skip the massive lines; in fact, it took only a minute or two to go through security since they have a special area designated for groups. At the colosseum, we were able to traverse the entire underground, which was AMAZING. She showed us rooms where animals and people were housed, and highlighted a small canal system used for water and waste. As we worked our way to the center, we started under the end with the partial arena floor, and we got to see reconstructed elevators. Then we walked the underground all the way to the other side of the colosseum. At that end, we went up to the 1st level (floor level) and were able to take pictures from there. Then we walked around to the other side where the arena floor is and were able to spend time on the arena floor itself taking more pictures. Finally, we were able to go to the second level and take pictures there as well. The colosseum has a collection of artifacts and models it displays within its corridors, and Lucia really brought context there as well. This tour was one of the highlights of our trip. It's well worth the price tag, which says a lot.

Great tour!

This tour was very good. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the Colosseum and the Roman forum. Would definitely recommend. We traveled with 2 young children (aged 9) who enjoyed the tour as well.

Tour shortened by nearly an hour (abandoned in the Forum) - and more like Random Facts than a solid introduction
Laura_L
, Jun 2022
Tour guide Flavio had many details to share. We would have liked to hear more basic introduction. We left feeling that we did not have a solid foundation about the Colosseum even though we knew random facts. Our tour started 15 minutes late because they changed the time the day before, and one couple didn't get the message, so the rest of us stood around for 30 minutes. Worst was that the tour was cut short by 45 minutes! We saw a little of the Forum, then our guide basically left us standing there clueless because the Tour company booked him for another tour that started before ours was scheduled to end - so he had to leave early. Unacceptable.

Fantastic tour and Paolo was an amazing guide. Very knowledgeable and was kind enough to take some extra time to answer questions and help our young daughter. Wonderful experience.

Not what we booked.

Not the "Small Group" Tour we paid for, but 20 people.... Even the guide mentioned this but carried on regardless. It's clearly not unusual. Visit to the Forum complex was very rushed and not detailed. Colosseum a bit better. Guide's English was not easy to understand. Trip started late and ended very promptly, so not the full time we were told either. I would not recommend this company or agency.

Interesting Tour but had a hiccup with the Underground portion
Nicole_C
, Jun 2022
Flavia was a great guide. I was a little disappointed with the Underground portion of the tour though - even though our whole group was English speaking, the Colosseum assigned a Spanish tour for us - so we didn't understand a word of the tour for the Underground portion and that was the whole purpose of booking this tour. Other than that, the tour was fine.

We had a great tour of the caves. Our tour guide was able to tell us with his photo Album and stories about how it was in history. Good job.

Best Underground Tour!

Our guide Giorgio was fantastic! So much information at just the right pace. I have toured the Colosseum before but got more from this tour than the others combined. Palentine Hill was awesome too!

We should get at least 25% of our money back because we could not understand our guides' English.

The Colluseum and Forum is fantastic. Since they are fantastic you need a good guide that can speak your language.

Great guide with great local info and jumping the queues was a pleasure. Both the Forum and Colloseum came to life.

Saw the underground just in time!

Glad we got to see the underground. We were told that the government was going to "restore" the Colosseum floor to be able to hold events there and would no longer offer the underground tours.

Our tour of the forum, palatine hill and collosseum with Julio was amazing. He was so engaging and funny! The collosseum itself was incredible, as expected, but the palatine hill was just as interesting and Julio gave us loads of information. Would recommend.

Would not recommend

We felt that the guide did not share useful information in an interesting way. He moved on too quickly, not allowing everyone to adequately see everything. However, they switched us to a different guide for the underground part of the coliseum, and she was fabulous! We learned so much and got so much useful information!

The Colosseum Tour with Gigi
Matt_M
, Apr 2022
We toured the Colosseum including the basement and the ruins around. This was a great tour on its own but was an incredible tour because our guide Gigi was incredible. Vast knowledge of the Colosseum (he's an archeologist) but a wonderful sense of humor and a great ability to keep everyone in the group interested. We highly recommend the tour - especially if you can get Gigi as your guide.
