Travel from Rome to Tivoli by air-conditioned coach to start your day trip. As you travel, listen to your guide’s commentary about Tivoli, a historic town in the Monti Tiburtini hills. A prestigious vacation spot in the days of Ancient Rome, the town is now popular for its two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Hadrian’s Villa and Villa d’Este.

Your first stop in Tivoli is at Hadrian’s Villa for a walking tour. Hear how the villa belonged to Emperor Hadrian who desired an unassuming vacation home as a tribute to his lover. By modern standards, his ‘humble abode’ could be considered a town in its own right.

The ruins of the emperor’s impressive estate consist of more than 30 buildings, and you’ll see the highlights as you explore. Discover the complex ruins of the old imperial palace as well as thermal baths, temples, libraries and subterranean passages that are wide enough for vehicles.

Enjoy lunch at your own expense, and then continue to Villa d'Este: explore the former Benedictine convent, and see why many consider the villa to be one of the finest of the Renaissance era.

As you explore, hear how Villa d’Este was built as an opulent abode for the son of Lucretia Borgia, a 15th-century duchess who attracted drama and gossip wherever she went. Make your way past the Fountain of Neptune, and wander through the gardens to see waterfalls, fountains and centenary trees.

Leave Villa d’Este after your tour, and then relax on your journey back to Rome.
Itinerary
Stop At:
Villa Adriana
This enchanting day trip from Rome begins with a 40-minute bus ride to Hadrian’s Villa. The vastness of Hadrian’s estate is a sight that will surely impress. The Emperor chose to build his residence outside the city in a place rich in water, in order to build the famous Canopus, one of the most preserved sites left in the complex. The statues surrounding this pool of water create stunning reflections on its surface, beautifully surrounded by luscious green gardens

Stop At:
Villa d'Este
We will leave the alluring ruins of the 2nd century A.D. far behind as we travel on to the 14th century to our second destination, Villa d’Este - one of the most beautiful Renaissance villas in Italy. This splendid palace, with its extraordinary gardens filled with hundreds of fountains, will leave you feeling captivated. Bernini’s monumental Neptune’s Fountain is considered the most impressive, its water jets reaching a height of 10 meters. Not to say that the Central Fountain and the Oval Fountain won’t leave you equally in awe

Our guide, Giuseppe, was wonderful! So relaxed and informative. The Villa de Adriana was spectacular as well as the Villa de Este gardens! Highly recommend this tour.

Poor experience overall

“As you travel, listen to your guide’s commentary about Tivoli” - there was no guide on the bus. In fact, although the tickets said to arrive 20 minutes early, from the company until it was time to start - even then, they took names, stickers, and told us that our guide would see us at the end of the first 40 minute bus ride (no guide on the bus, no communication). Bus windows were so dirty that you could not take any photos, history on tour was minimal, communication was poor (and led to us losing a member of our party who had health problems because the group slit in two - with one group to take the elevator without notice that the rest of us would be touring the first level of Villa de’Este before meeting up with them, and gage instructions to meet “in the garden” (the gardens are HUGE and multi level) Honestly, the list could go on but I will spare you the stories. We saw recent negative reviews a few days before the tour but decided to take our chances. We wish we hadn’t. It was VERY basic and paled in comparison to every other Viator experience we have had.

Mind boggling experience. Giuseppe brought the trip to life with his before and after presentation. Huge does not do justice to this weekend get away for the greatest builder of the ancient world

Don't take this tour

The bus was late, the bus driver was too lazy to pull the bus to the curp to make it a little easy to get on or off the bus, Hadrian's Villa has no gardens so it was pretty much of a time filler before getting to Tivoli "Gardens" which is a collection of fountains with virtually no flowers. LOTS of steps, ramps, hills, which left many seniors exhausted. Our guide left us at the furthest point of the tour leading us to take wrong turns and significantly more steps down and up than were necessary. I would never recommend this tour to anyone.

Rewarding Experience

We've been to Rome nearly a dozen times both as tourists and as planners for trips. Schedule never permitted the full day at the villas. Finally this year we made the effort and had a wonderful time. Great guide and rewarding experience. Lots of steps though.

Botched tour

The weakest of three Roman excursions we undertook. I paid for an English tour with lunch. I got an Italian/English tour with 50% of time spent in Italian. Window of bus was so dirty we were unable to take photographs through it. Tour leader tried to deny us pre-paid lunch. We had our printed confirmation with barcode that said lunch, but we had to spend time on guide’s cellphone with her headquarters before they grudgingly offered us lunch. What we saw was terrific. The mechanics of the tour were not.

Tivoli was very nice.

Very nice day trip from Rome, Villa d’Este was fabulous. You need to have decent mobility to enjoy it all, steps and broken terrain, very ancient areas.

Good tour spoilt by significant safety issue
Diarmuid_B

Tour guide (Giuseppe) was very good and authoritative on his subject, Dialogue was clear and well paced. A good day was spoilt by a significant safety issue in so much as there was no seat belt in the minibus for the seat on which I was obliged to sit (it had obviously been cut and was absent). Luckily no accident occurred but the vehicle was not road worthy and should not have been used.

Enjoyed the fountains. Go with a different guide if you can.

Great to see both Villas, and all the fantastic fountains. You don’t meet the tour guide until you are at the first Villa, and they leave after the second one. The drive there and back has no commentary, no information at all. They corral you into a “family restaurant” for lunch between villas. When we saw what was happening, we skipped out and roamed Tivoli instead, meeting up with the group as they entered the second Villa. So glad we did! Gave this 3 out of 5, as the value is the entrance fees and price of transportation to and from Rome.

10 out 10. Great time management. Skip the lunch and eat on your own in Trivoli (you have 1.5 hours of free time). Fountains were amazing as was Hadrains Villa. We did 3 tours through Viator and this was far and above our favorite
