Bavarian Mountains and Salt-Mines Tour from Salzburg

This was a great tour! The ride is about 45 minutes to the salt mines - but note these are not the Austrian salt mines. They are in Germany. The salt mines tour is about an hour and 15 minutes and very interesting, and then there’s some free time in a Bavarian town. Our tour guide recommended a wonderful cafe for apple strudel and tea.

The tour guide was good but this felt more like a bus shuttle. A lot of time was spent dropping and picking other tours up. Dropped off eagles nest tour> went to salt mines tour and that was nice. It is something you can do on your own so instead I probably would have looked up the city bus and went on my own. Then we had to pick up the eagles nest tour. Then we went to a little town for about an hour for lunch. The title said Bavarian Mountains and I thought this was a little misleading. I thought there would be sightseeing of the mountains. I did not get a single picture of a mountain. It would be nice if the bus incorporated this into the tour, even if it means pulling over 3-4 times at scenic pullouts for 5 minutes. Then after lunch we dropped off another tour back at the salt mines...probably wasted 1-1.5 hrs on other people’s tours.

The tour was a ton of fun. My wife and I had a lot of fun in the mines. We stopped in Berchtesgaden for a coffee/snack break after the mines. It is a very nice little old town. Our tour guide Michelle was great and we enjoyed ourselves the whole time.

Highly recommend this tour. Fabulous tour guide in Walter, so knowledgeable. Tour was interesting and also great fun.

Kind of kitschy. More a ride for kids than an actual salt mine tour. We looked forward to The part with th lake and they kept us in the dark. Couldn't even see it.

Leo was phenomenal! We had such a good day. He was knowledgeable about the area, best picture places, restaurants, the history, etc. He made us laugh all day, and was so kind and happy. This was one of our top favorite tours because of him--we would recommend him to anyone! I was even looking for a recipe for a dish I had while in Austria, and Leo was able to tell me specifically how to cook it. If there's one tour you do in Salzburg, it should be this one! Everything was planned perfectly, we had some time to shop in a little nearby town. The salt mines were incredible and a very cool experience. We hope we can come back someday soon and take another tour with Leo!

I often leave reviews but generally to say that I am really happy with the service I have received. First of all I would like to say that the actual journey/drive to/from the mountains was great and the salt mines tour was fantastic. So enjoyable, enlightening and fun. My sisters and I had a great afternoon out. However, our driver/guide was utterly miserable and, what can only be described as rude. We didn't even catch his name. There were 7 of us in a minibus and I know that we all felt uncomfortable with the attitude of the driver. He was totally unapproachable and couldn't hide his disinterest in both the trip and us as customers. We understand the company was Panorama Tours who, interestingly, we had taken a trip with the previous few days (to the Sound of Music). On the previous trip with Peter, Evo etc it was fantastic as they were great ambassadors for Panorama Tours. The trip on the Sunday afternoon to the salt mine was in utter and stark contrast to our experience the 2 days before. When we departed the mini bus I tried to tip the driver/tour guide and he simply barked "No" and turned his back on me. This was unnecessary and embarrassing. I don't know whether this guy acted like this because we hadn't booked through Panorama tours directly or that he just didn't like customers or he was having a really bad day. Regardless, the impression he left us with was very poor and he did actually spoil what was otherwise a thoroughly enjoyable trip. What made it worse was that it was booked for my sister's 50th birthday which, on 3rd January, Panorama tour guides had made a lovely day but on the 5th January it was marred by this tour guide/driver. I hate to leave a review like this but it would put me off booking via Viator again because of this experience which is a shame.

This was such a well-organized and interactive tour! Our guide Walter was great, the journey to and from was smooth, and it was just a lot of fun overall. Would definitely recommend!

If you have half day spare in Salzburg, this tour is a good one to go. It covers the beauty of nature outside Salzburg plus the knowledge of the history and the salt mines.

Walter was an excellent guide and driver taking us through the alps and stopping at the most picturesque places with lots of trivia and stories. The salt mines were also very interesting though the audio guides we had were faulty making it difficult to follow the German narration.
